WMEA News WMEA Advocacy Drive-In

advice on various topics. In addition, the WAME committee had Tooshar Swain of NAfME present a session on ESSA and advocacy in Wisconsin. The conference also included a great exhibit area. Many attendees used the exclusive exhibit hall time to talk with colleagues and visit the exhibits.

The Aspiring Music Majors program was held on the Friday of conference for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a degree in music. This year’s program had over 75 students in attendance. They listened to great presentations, were encouraged to visit the colleges and other exhibitors, could attend specially selected sessions, and had a question and answer session with collegiate music members.

Wisconsin Advocates for Music Educa- tion (WAME), the advocacy committee of WMEA, is hosting an Advocacy Drive-In Day on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. With the ‘Every Student Succeeds Act’ replacing ‘No Child Left Behind,’ music is now part of a Well-Rounded Education by law. The WI DPI submitted Wisconsin’s ESSA implementation plan to the U.S. Dept. of Education in September. WMEA plans to coordinate with the legislature to ensure that a quality music education continues to be available to all Wisconsin students.

• Come to Madison to share WMEA ‘Asks’ with your state legislators.

• Training will occur that morning before we walk to the Capitol together.

• Advocating for Wisconsin students and the future of music education is worth a personal day!

We need you to join us! Meet us at The Madison Concourse Hotel (1 W. Dayton St, Madison) at 9 a.m. for training on how to talk to your legislator. We will then go to the Capitol to meet with legislators.

The NAfME North Central Division Board, led by North Central Division President Leyla Sanyer, met at the Wis- consin Center for Music Education. Representatives from all 10 states were present, including WMEA President Lynn Seidl, WMEA President-Elect Kati Seiter and WMEA Past-President Jim Scheuer. Each state gave reports, as well as NAfME President Denese Odgaard and NAfME Executive Director and CEO Mike Blakeslee, who were also in attendance. In addition to reports, breakout sessions were implemented and ideas generated through topics of teacher shortage, diver- sity and ESSA. Finally, networking time was provided and tours of venues in our great city of Madison. It was very excit- ing to have this meeting in the Wisconsin Center for Music Education for the second time. We were able to really show off what great music education is happening in Wisconsin.
