specialists can communicate what triggers a student’s behavioral challenges. Consistency with their behavioral plans in other areas is always a bonus. Many teachers use a prearranged signal or word to notify the student when his or her behavior is inappropriate.

• When a student comes to class with a paraprofessional, listen to their suggestions. They are with this child most of the day and can offer lots of insight. At the same time ask the paraprofessional to be an active part of your class. Their enthusiasm for the music making is a good role model for all and sets the expectations for your special learner.

• Ask your custodian for help with constructing adaptive instruments.

• Consult with your technology staff for help with ideas for creative adaptive uses of Smartboards, com- puters, iPads and other technolo- gies.

• Communicate with parents about adaptations through report cards, emails and phone calls.

In conclusion, creating an inclusive envi- ronment for students can only be success- ful when students feel that they are truly a part of the school community. Making sure that your students know that you value them for who they are and that they are a part of your family of music makers is important.
