2017 WSMA State Marching Band

Championships Results October 14, 2017 • UW-Whitewater Perkins Stadium Erica Ruppert, WSMA Program Director

Congratulations to all bands that par- ticipated in the 33rd

annual WSMA State

Marching Band Championships. This one- day event brings families and communities together to support the musicianship, art, dedication and creativity of participat- ing students, directors and schools in the culminating performance of Wisconsin marching activity.

In the competitive classes, 28 bands as- sembled to perform for a team of eight marching band experts adjudicating the areas of music performance, general ef- fect, percussion and color guard. Award divisions for the competitive classes are based on a pre-determined score. The UW-Whitewater’s Warhawk Marching Band presented two guest exhibition per- formances. Additional exhibition perfor- mances included the Class AA champions, who competed in the morning and then performed again in exhibition during the Class AAA and Class A segment of the championships that evening.

At this year’s championships, Daniel J. Hopkins was the third individual inducted into the WSMA Marching Band Hall of

Fame. The Hall of Fame is intended to recognize the contributions made by in- dividuals to the marching activity in Wisconsin. Under Hopkins’ direction, the Cum- berland High School March- ing Band has appeared at the WSMA State Marching Band Championships for 20 con- secutive years. As of 2017, his band has established it- self as a perennial leader in performance excellence by winning a record 13 state championships, the most for a director in WSMA history. In addition to teaching, Hopkins has been a valued contributor to WSMA, dedicating time and effort to developing student programs. As well as being an active clinician and adjudicator, he has served on Marching Band and State Honors Music Project Committees and as WMEA Northwest District vice president. A plaque recognizing Dan Hopkins and his accomplishments will be placed at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education.

2017 Hall of Fame Inductee Daniel J. Hopkins Honored by WSMA Executive Director Tim Schaid, Member Services Associate (and former student) Anne Proescholdt and President Jon Gilliland.

This event would not be possible without an army of volunteers. WSMA wishes to thank all of the people who helped to make this event a success. Special thanks to Dr. Glenn Hayes and the UW-Whitewater students, faculty, staff and security officers that worked all day long making sure that the event ran smoothly. Congratulations to all of the participating bands.
