native movement could be provided in the B section by non-ambulatory students.

There are a plethora of children’s books about trains that would tie in beautifully with “The Little Train of the Caipira” by Villa Lobos. Every class period spent studying this composition could end with the reading of a classic children’s train book from the school or public library. It is also a great piece to use when teaching students to respond to varying tempos.

“Viennese Musical Clock” is in rondo form. Each section of the rondo could have

varying difficulty of rhythmic ostinato pattern played by students on classroom instruments. The students needing a steady beat only pattern could be in the A group and other students having a little more beat independence, could create a more complex pattern for the B section and the more advanced students could create a even more challenging ostinato pattern for the C section.

Give students a noisemaker toy to play along with a recording of “The Toy Symphony.” For every unusual instru- ment sound heard, allow the students to

play their instruments. They will never forget this symphony after their own per- formance. Students could meet in small groups and plan what sound to interject every time the “cuckoo” sound is heard. When the orchestra performance is played, alternate which group will perform. If pos- sible, end with all groups playing.

Happy listening…
