Music Education: Embracing Diversity at the 2018 Wisconsin State Music

According to the University of Ore- gon’s Office of Mul- ticultural Affairs, diversity means: “The concept of di- versity encompass- es acceptance and respect. It means understanding that


each individual is unique, and recogniz- ing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnic- ity, gender, sexual orientation, socio- economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive and nurtur- ing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.”


The theme for the 2018 Wisconsin State Music Conference is “Music Educa- tion: Embracing Diversity.” As stated in the definition, it can mean a number of things. One thought is regarding the diverse classes music educators provide to students. Are all students taking music classes? Does your school district have music courses that are non-performing? What courses could be offered that would interest all students? The WMEA Council has a new secondary general music posi- tion which focuses on this idea. I would invite you to explore the various secondary general music sessions at the conference in October.


Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) is a new category for conference this year as well. In planning for confer- ence, we were looking for sessions that focused on IDEA and through that work we invited Constance McKoy to speak and

share her wealth of knowledge. Connie is professor and director of undergraduate studies in the University of North Carolina Greensboro School of Music. She has taught general music, choir, and been a band assistant. Recently, she co-authored a book titled Culturally Responsive Teaching in Music Education: From Understanding to Application published by Routledge. We are very excited to see her present two sessions at the October conference; one on Thursday and one on Friday.
