Embracing Diversity of Religion If approached from the angle of learning about the diversity of religions represented in the classroom and throughout the world, religious music could possibly be studied and programmed. Keeping the focus squarely on the study of diversity and in- clusion and choosing a performance date outside of December may help to clarify that the concert is not a “Holiday Concert,” but a study of music representative of the diversity of world religions.
Embracing Diversity in Ability
All teachers encounter the creative challenge of teaching a myriad of learning styles and abilities. Providing opportunities for visual, aural and kinesthetic learners to demonstrate understanding through a method that reso- nates with their learning style will round the educational experience for all students. En- couraging demonstration of mastery through improvisation, composition, discussion,
presentation and other creative formats will result in a vibrant and welcoming orchestra room. Ensuring meaningful experiences and successful outcomes for students with additional learning challenges will stretch the learning plans and opportunities even further. Allowing students to work together and to create their own culminating projects will highlight and acknowledge the con- tributions of the diverse population in the orchestra classroom.
Embracing Diversity of Gender Identity or Expression Gender-neutral language and strategies are important qualities in a gender-inclusive classroom. Implementing gender-neutral methods of grouping students (replacing “boys vs. girls” with “January – June birthdays vs. July – December birthdays,” for example) and avoiding gender-specific references are meaningful steps in embrac- ing students of all gender identities and expressions.
Teachers are fortunate to be surrounded by a beautifully diverse population ev- ery day. Designing orchestra learning outcomes through the lens of studying and celebrating diversity rounds and deepens the educational experience and acknowledges the value of each student. Approaching the orchestra curriculum as a celebration of diversity will result in increased student ownership and leader- ship as students will share facets of their individuality with the rest of the class. Cultivating leadership skills while simul- taneously developing an awareness and appreciation of our differences will make for a well-rounded, meaningful music education that stretches well beyond the confines of a musical score.
