high school state honors music project High School State Honors Mixed Choir Staff


Richard Bjella, professor emeritus from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas is the conductor of the 2018 WSMA High School State Honors Mixed Choir. Micki Carlson, recently retired from Suring Elementary School, is the mixed choir coordina- tor and soprano section coach. Other section coaches include Jennifer Schwingle from Kettle Moraine High School in Wales (alto), John Popke from Kimberly High School (tenor), Michael Pufall from Bay Port High School in Green Bay (bass), and Amy Wright from Pulaski Community Middle School is the mixed choir accompanist.


Fall Concert: Thursday, October 25, 8 p.m., Overture Hall, Overture Center, 201 State Street, Madison, WI.

High School State Honors Jazz Ensemble Staff


Matthew Buchman, director of jazz studies at UW-Stevens Point is the conductor of the 2018 WSMA High School State Honors Jazz Ensemble. Chris Behrens from Beloit Memorial High School is the jazz ensemble coordinator and rhythm section coach. Other section coaches include William Nelson from Ripon Middle School (saxophone), Robert Swerman who recently retired from La Crosse Central High School (trumpet) and Katie Poole from Bullen High School in Kenosha (trombone).

50th Anniversary WSMA Honors Concerts!


Plan now to attend all three WSMA State Honors Music Project concerts that are held in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Music Conference. The performances are certain to inspire and rejuvenate music teachers. The spirit, musicianship and performance quality of these concerts is a reminder of the many reasons we go into this profession. These concerts provide the opportunity for teachers to hear some of the most accomplished young musicians that the state has to offer.


50th Anniversary Reception


There will be a special reception held at the Overture Center Promenade Hall and Terrace 6–8 p.m. with a special program from 6:45–7:15 p.m. for past and present High School State Honors staff, students and conductors. Please share the date with those you served, played or sang with and plan to attend! You can also share your memories by visiting wsmamusic.org/50years.


Remember, online registration begins November 1 for the 2019 WSMA High School State Honors Project. Applications are due no later than Saturday, December 1, 2018. Encourage students to apply and audition for this incredible experience.
