New Beginnings Laurie N. Fellenz, Executive Director
It is an honor, as the new executive di- rector of Wisconsin School Music As- sociation (WSMA), Wisconsin Music Educators Associa- tion (WMEA) and Wisconsin Founda- tion for School Mu-
sic (WFSM), to welcome you all to the 2018–19 school year! Summer can often be a time where the pace is still brisk, but with the warm Wisconsin sun brings an opportunity for seasonal experiences and reflection. It is through this ability to reflect and adjust that we return to a new school year filled with optimism and new ideas for meeting the needs of all learners.
Being entrusted with the opportunity to serve as executive director of WSMA, WMEA and WFSM is both a privilege and responsibility that I will embrace with pas- sion and integrity for the power of a qual- ity music education. As a music educator for 20 years and arts administrator for 8 years, I am very aware of the joys and the challenges we face in our profession. It is
critical that listening be the focus during this first year. I’ll be looking to attend various festivals, planning meetings, adjudicator trainings and professional development sessions to hear from music educators in our member schools. It is important to deeply understand the needs of our children and our schools through the lens of those who serve our students and families every day.
It will be important to reinvest in the col- lective vision of our state associations and foundation to ensure that in Wisconsin schools and communities, all have ac- cess to enriching musical opportunities that assure a lifetime of involvement and enjoyment. To ensure that all students have opportunities which encourage lifelong involvement in music, WSMA will continue to provide statewide music programming activities, offer leadership and support for school music programs, and advance music as an integral part of the school curriculum and life. WMEA will journey forward in support of music education by representing the shared interests and needs of Wisconsin music educators and fostering their professional growth in a global society.

Watch for more information to come! 8
Through the expertise of our WMEA lead- ership and in partnership with schools, we need to find more ways to nurture music educators on their journey:
• As middle school and high school students deciding to pursue music education as a field of study
• As collegiates who are forming their early career values and beliefs
• As early career teachers as they take their first job and face the joys and challenges of educating a diverse community of learners
• As mid career teachers who are looking for additional ways to connect and give back to their profession
• As retiring teachers who are transitioning to the next chapter in their lives
Leadership is only the beginning. We also need to ensure that WFSM can find in- novative ways to promote and perpetuate music education in the schools of Wiscon- sin for both students and educators. I look forward to traveling this road with you as we do this most important work.
Please join me as we start on this journey together by attending this year’s Wis- consin State Music Conference, themed “Music Education: Embracing Diversity,” which will be held October 24–27 at the stunning Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center in Madison. In addition to a phenomenal set of exhibits, presenta- tions, performances and keynote speakers, we will honor the 50th
anniversary of the
High School State Honors Project. This conference is one that is sure to be memo- rable, and it will be a great way for us to meet. I look forward to connecting with you soon!
