comprehesive musicianship through performance
Does live music get created in your home? By whom and when? Student

parent/guardian and students, to list a few. I also follow up with a similar interview at the end of the year, with questions de- signed by the students.
Make a Personal Connection
You have probably seen the video of North Carolina teacher Barry White giving a personalized handshake to each one of his fifth grade students:
https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=I0jgcyfC2r8. While this is
impressive, it may not be practical. My assessment strategy to help me make con- nections while I am teaching is the ques- tion: “Who have I not talked to today?” In the course of a class period, I ask a lot of questions and I ask for a lot of student input. I encourage students to volunteer to be involved, but there are the students who prefer to hide or withdraw. These students are automatically on my radar to engage with at the beginning or end of class, or in the hallway or lunch room outside of class. I also highly recommend the website “TeachThought: We Grow Teachers.” This innovative website has articles, podcasts and resources for ways to engage students, embrace diversity and grow critical thinking skills: https://www.
teachthought.com/.
Assessment Is Just the Beginning It is important to note that assessment is only one point of the CMP model. If you found the above strategies helpful, I hope that you will use the information you gather to 1) better inform your music selection, 2) deepen your analysis of that music, 3) enrich your teaching outcomes, and 4) vary your teaching strategies, so that you can truly embrace the diversity within your class.
Please be sure to check out the CMP themed workshops at the Wisconsin State Music Conference and plan to join us for the 2019 CMP Summer Workshop in Madison at Edgewood College!
