60 Water / Wastewater Titan Enterprises Expands its Liquid Flow Meter Calibration Capacity


Titan Enterprises has been performing all its calibration requirements in-house since 1994 using their positive displacement oil or water fl ow rigs. All fl owmeters manufactured by Titan (except for the small beverage meters) are calibrated against traceable standards, tested and issued with a calibration certifi cate.


Twelve months ago, Titan decided to make the signifi cant investment in a new calibration rig which would both increase their capacity and improve their capability to calibrate their liquid fl ow measurement devices. Having just received delivery of this new rig, it is being commissioned, calibration software installed, and will be ready to be put to use within the month.


Jeremy Thorne, Operations Manager at Titan Enterprises, commented: “Historically the production of our fl owmeters has been limited by the fl owmeter calibration capability. The new fl ow rig will increase our calibration capacity at the lower fl ow rates below 4 L/min. This will enable us to increase our production throughput as well as expanding Titan’s total range of fl ow calibration.”


Why should fl ow meters be calibrated?


Engineers, scientists and measurement specialists rely on a fl ow meter’s accuracy to maintain or improve the fi nancial viability, quality and safety of a product or process. Used within a wide variety of applications, including pharmaceuticals, aerospace, food and beverage, energy, and agro/petrochemical, where accurate fl ow measurement is critical, regular calibration ensures these measuring devices continue to operate within acceptable limits.


Jeremy added: “As well as calibrating our fl ow meters during production, we also offer a re-


calibration service to our customers. The performance and accuracy of fl owmeters, even the most rugged ones, will degrade over time. Mechanical meters will wear, and electronic ones


can suffer minor degradation in the electronics or mechanical damage from impact or corrosion.”


Flow Meter Calibration Methodology


Titan Enterprises use piston provers for fl ow meter calibration, our primary rigs rated from 0.002-40 L/ min and 0.05-160 L/min. With the new rig our low-end fl ow calibration can be reduced to 0.05 ml/min. The calibrators use a piston within a smooth bore tube to act as a moving barrier between the pressurising gas and the displaced test fl uid. All Titan fl ow calibrations are traceable to national standards and have real time temperature compensation to accommodate changes in the fl uid properties. Our piston prover systems are calibrated annually against certifi ed weigh scales and are pneumatically or hydraulically driven to ensure a constant fl ow rate.


Like the main fl ow rigs the volumetric throughput for Titan’s new calibration rig is traceable to national standards via a water draw test. Flows as low as 0.05 ml/min may be calibrated using this rig, which has a repeatability value of ±0.02% and operates at an uncertainty of 0.03%.


Jeremy concludes: “Titan will also be increasing its production staffi ng levels to meet increasing demand, optimise our production rates and functionality that the new rig will give us.”

AQUAREAD LAUNCH NEW PRO RANGE OF MULTIPARAMETER WATER MONITORING INSTRUMENTS


The PRO range builds on the success of the Aquaprobe and Aquasonde series, elevating every aspect of the construction, design, features and specifi cations. They bring with them new-to-industry materials allowing measurement at far greater depths, a unique measurement chamber for improved sensor stability in the most demanding applications and smart sensors that hold their calibration data, allowing for simple sensor exchange in the fi eld.


Both the Aquaprobe (AP) and Aquasonde (AS) models of the PRO range feature a combination of titanium and carbon fi bre, offering both exceptional corrosion resistance and high compressive strength. As a result, both are capable of measuring at extreme depths of up to 1000ft (300m).


The protective end cap, found on all Aquaprobes, has been extended along the inside of the sleeve. When screwed onto the sleeve it creates a more stable measurement chamber for all installed sensors. Its matt black design prevents refl ection and the sealed environment is not subject to interference from stray light.


The measurement chamber can also be used for sensor calibration using the calibration cup that push-fi ts to the base of the probe. This surrounds and seals the holes and allows the probe to stand upright. Utilising the measurement chamber for calibration in this way reduces the volume of calibration solution required, reducing maintenance costs.


The range sees the introduction of smart sensors, sensors that hold calibration data allowing exchange without the need to recalibrate. Sensors can be carefully calibrated in the lab


and taken to the deployment site for simple exchange, removing the need to calibrate in the fi eld.


The PRO range come complete with all the key water quality smart sensors as standard and is equipped with a self-cleaning system to keep them clean for prolonged monitoring. Standard sensors include optical dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, ORP, temperature and depth.


Four Auxiliary ports allow extra smart sensors to be installed, diversifying monitoring options.


The AS-PRO is fi tted with a novel three- position switch ring mechanism allowing you to confi dently switch the function of the sonde. Using the switch ring you can turn the unit off, set it to auto or activate Bluetooth mode. The switch ring includes multi-coloured LED for various indications.


When in Auto mode the sonde will detect if its connector has been blanked off, if it’s connected to a vented cable, if it’s connected to an Aquameter or if it’s connected to a PC via USB, and reacts accordingly.


When set to Bluetooth mode, using the SondeLink App, the user can take live data readings, calibrate the Sonde, set-up the logging regime, check battery and memory levels and upload logged data from the Sonde to the PC.
