New, modular design of portable gas analysers for biogas and waste management applications reduces maintenance and downtime costs
QED Environmental Systems has put modularity at the heart of its new series of portable gas analysers for the biogas and waste management industries. The new GEOTECH i-Q™ series, which is set to replace the highly popular 5000 range (Biogas, GA & GEM), comprises of a series of new portable gas analysers suitable for a wide variety of anaerobic digestion, biogas, landfi ll and land remediation applications.
One of the defi ning features of the i-Q™ series will be its intelligent modular architecture, with user-replaceable gas cells, pressure sensors and fi lters all intended to maximise uptime and minimise the need for back-to-base servicing and calibration. As such, pre-calibrated modules can be sent direct to site from the factory as part of planned maintenance activity, with a new calibration certifi cation generated through QED’s GAMSoft software once the modules have been replaced.
In addition to greater modularity, new features include an enhanced 10-hour battery life, a 5” touchscreen display and dedicated system pressure port to improve reading and process time. Six programmable ‘hot keys’ on the side of the module also enable easy in-fi eld use if any operator is wearing gloves.
All models offer Wi-Fi connectivity, while the affi nity Bluetooth device promotes i-Q™ series compatibility with legacy accessories such as temperature and humidity probes, and anemometers.
Dean Kavanagh, Managing Director, QED Environmental Systems Ltd. commented: “The launch of the i-Q™ series is a landmark moment for QED and represents the culmination of over 25 years’ of R&D in the fi eld of portable gas analysis technology.
“While we are excited to be rolling out new models for a host of different applications over the coming months, we believe the i-Q™ series really sets the benchmark for what operators can expect from this new generation of gas analysis technology. Benefi tting from the most accurate measurement capabilities available on the market and enhanced uptime achieved through its intelligent modular design; the i-Q™ series really is a cut above any other portable gas analysis technology.”

New two channel digital detector with digital interface – for easy integration and precise measurements

Analogue pyroelectric detectors from InfraTec have been used in a number of different customer applications for over 30 years. These have now been joined by a new range of digital pyroelectric detectors called PyrIQ. Alongside the 4-channel detector, InfraTec has also developed the LID-2322: a compensated 2-channel detector in the TO39 housing which is primarily intended for gas analysis devices.
The two-channel LID-2322 is ideal for mobile devices thanks to its small and compact housing and can also run on batteries. It is suitable for use in different applications, e.g. harsh environments, as
the optional thermal compensation reduces the effect of external fl uctuations. The integrated I²C communication interface with up to 1 MHz enables the measured values to be read out immediately via a PC or microcontroller in a reliable, standardised manner. Apart from the power supply connections, only two additional connections are required for operation of the detector to allow it to be parameterised and read out. This keeps the external hardware requirements to a minimum and makes it much easier to integrate the detector into the application. Using the additional clock input makes it possible to synchronise the radiator and the detector clock, allowing highly precise signal evaluation with a stable frequency.
Like all detectors from InfraTec, the digital detector is based on lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) as sensor material. In contrast to other materials, LiTaO3 offers a good signal-to-noise ratio and high sensitivity without additional cooling or temperature stabilisation. All of the internal signal processing is carried out by an ASIC (application-specifi c integrated circuit). The signal generated by the pyroelectric elements is amplifi ed in this circuit and then digitised with a 16-bit A/D converter. In contrast to analogue detectors, this allows the detector parameters to be fl exibly confi gured in order to optimise the signal processing. The spatial concentration and shielding of the entire signal conversion of the detector offer improved electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Another special feature is the “fast recovery after saturation” function. This function detects the override due to a defective operating status or external override and automatically resets the analogue input stage within a few milliseconds. This signifi cantly reduces the time it takes for a measuring system to be ready for use again after starting or after temperature changes.
All in all, the LID-2322 offers excellent fl exibility and functionality combined with easy system integration in the standard TO39 housing.
