Annual Guide 2019 I SOURCE TESTING ASSOCIATION

Mutual recognition is seen as key to the Brexit negotiations and so far, it appears the UK government has responded to this. The Government White Paper ‘The future relationship between the UK and the EU’ (dated July 2018), seeks to ensure that manufacturers need only to undergo one certifi cation process to be recognised in both the UK and EU market.

Should a ‘No deal’ Brexit be reached, the UK government has issued ‘Technical Notices’ which confi rm that UK NBs will not be recognised in the EU. A new UK mark would be introduced to replace CE markings. CE marked products would be accepted in the UK for a specifi ed time, after which companies would be required to certify twice to cover both UK and EU markets.

It is also important to note, regardless of any Brexit deal, UKAS will continue to be the UK accreditation body and Sira will continue to be the certifi cation body accredited for MCERTS. The uncertainty surrounding Notifi ed Bodies will not impact this.

Should a transition or trade agreement not result, to make sure NBs are positioned to continue to serve customers effectively, Work is actively going on to establishing ATEX Notifi ed Bodies in mainland Europe and in Canada (under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)). This will ensure there is an alternative NBs in operation to which certifi cations can be transferred if required.

As Brexit negotiations progress, we continue to monitor the situation closely and will take the actions necessary to ensure no service interruptions to the MCERTs Scheme and the STAs members certifi cation.
