New generation of ultrasonic snow depth sensors

Sommer Messtechnik have recently unveiled their new USH-9 ultrasonic, snow depth sensors, which has been designed to provide precise, reliable and continuous results whilst being maintenance free. The USH-9 has proved itself in extreme conditions, having performed well even in research stations in Antarctica. The sensors are easily integrated into existing measurement stations and weather stations using either analogue or digital interfaces.

USH-9 sensors come with a robust, sealed ceramic membrane which takes care about the maintenance free operation. Due to the use of an optimized protective shield, to defend against the effects of snow and ice, no heating is needed, furthermore a highly effi cient integrated lightning protection is included as well. This allows the sensor to perform even in the most bitter of winter conditions. The sensors will automatically compensate for fl uctuating temperatures affecting the speed of its ultrasonic signal. The USH-9’s capability to perform reliably autonomously makes it a highly economic option in terms of lifecycle costs and reduces the costs of ownership.

The sensors’ parameters can be set simply by utilising COMMANDER software. There is also a ‘sleep mode’ to reduce energy consumption between measuring phases and operators can adjust the quantity of measurements to suit their specifi c task. Operators can detect snow falls, precipitation intensity, whether snow has settled on the ground and status updates on previous limit values. Specially the new added features to recognize snow fall and rain add a lot of value to the new maintenance free sensor.

SOMMER has enjoyed excellent feedback from very satisfi ed customers, one of whom described the accuracy of the USH-9 as ‘breathtaking’. This sensor is the latest development from a company who has specialist in highly accurate measurement technology for environmental monitoring for over 3 decades.

is one of Europe’s leading companies in the production and sales of sampling systems for industrial emissions, outdoor and indoor air quality and occupational health.

TCR Tecora® TCR Tecora’s® specialise in the production of volumetric meters/pumps for

pollutant control of emissions from stationary sources. They also manufacture world class, gravimetric isokinetic samplers for the determination of particulate matter, a vital component when monitoring micropollutants or, more specifi cally dioxins (eg: PCDD / F and PCBs dioxin ) with a DECS®

long-term

sampler (Dioxin Emission Continuous Sampling) to be compliant with the technical standards of the sector.

The TCR Tecora® development and production departments are able to

customise their systems to meet the specifi c needs of a wide range of clients ranging from regional environmental protection agencies, laboratories, consultants, research centres in industry sectors such as cement, refi neries, steelworks and the metallurgical industries. They can offer sampling probes for standard types of pollutants or individual, tailor-made solutions (heated probes for gas sampling at emission).

Outdoor ambient air monitoring is another of TCR Tecora® areas of expertise.

This has been highlighted by the development and production of their ECHO PM atmospheric particulate samplers, as well as the Skypost PM sequential stations for particulates and the ECHO HiVol high volume samplers for micro- pollutants.

TCR Tecora® supply their customers instrumentation in accordance with

international standards, designed to simplify the operation of the stack tester and at the same time improving the accuracy and reliability of the measurements taken.

TCR Tecora® has an active role in the CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation)

Working Groups with the aim of improving European and Internationals Air Quality Standards. They are headquartered near Milan with a wide sales networking throughout Europe and overseas. Their 40 highly trained and specialised distributors allow them to offer the same high standard of product, service and assistance on a local and international basis.

Specialist air monitoring technology tailored for every need

Hamamatsu Photonics recently introduced their smallest grating spectrometer, the SMD series mini-spectrometer C14384MA, offering high near-infrared sensitivity, compact size, light weight and low cost. Compared to Hamamatsu’s existing range of MS series mini-spectrometers, the C14384MA is about 1/40th of the cubic size and 1/30th of the weight. It also offers sensitivity in the same near-infrared range, but around 50 times higher. This makes the C14384MA ideal for applications where real-time on-site measurement is required, for example environmental analysis from quadcopters to drones.
