Recognising the growing infl uence of acoustics on building design and the need to reduce the impact of noise from traffi c, industry and neighbours on new housing developments and offi ce units, Svantek has introduced a Building Acoustic (BA) Assistant App to support its Class 1 SVAN 977A or SVAN 979 sound level meters with built-in Bluetooth® interface.
The companion free BA Assistant App’s easy to use format allows users to go from room to room with the sound insulation results available for sending to the end customer immediately.
Svantek’s highly accurate SVAN 977A and SVAN 979 sound level meters offer millisecond spectra logging making them ideal for building acoustics measurements with façade, airborne or impact sound insulation results. In fact, the SVAN 979 is one of the most powerful sound level meters on the market. It has a built-in sine wave, pink noise and white noise generator which helps reduce the amount of equipment being carried.
How to measure phosphorus without using colorimetry or any reagents at all
Developed for Android platforms, Svantek’s BA Assistant smartphone app is easy to install and guides users through the sound insulation measurement procedure in accordance with ISO 16283. Sound insulation results are presented on the display in the form of a report compliant with the ISO requirements. The sound insulation calculation is done automatically once the data fi les are assigned to rooms in BA Assistant App. The ISO 17 rating of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements is automatically calculated and included in the report templates.
A project containing measurements from the source and receiving rooms for different sound source positions is created during the monitoring period. The project is saved in the memory of the sound level meter along with the measurement fi les. The user interface allows results to be previewed in the form of time history plots as numerical values. The size of the display of a mobile device makes it convenient to display spectrum views such as 1/3 octave analysis. Svantek’s BA Assistant App enables users to add images and voice comments to the measurement projects.
The App can be used with Svantek’s SP 95 Impact Ball for sound insulation testing in lightweight structures. It is dropped vertically in a free fall from height of 100cm to the surface of the fl oor. The Drone is a Universal Systems Interface (USI) that allows users to connect sound level meters to the BA App through a Bluetooth® analog output or with a cable using the serial interface. Once connected, the smartphone App will start and stop the signal from sound sources automatically.

Compass CPR, from PMA, is a feed forward coagulation control system for wastewater treatment works, but with a difference – Compass CPR characterises organic load AND outputs a phosphorus concentration that is subsequently used as part of the nutrient removal control philosophy - all achieved without the need for chemical reagents nor consumable parts, the system being based on an advanced optical measurement system.
Compass CPR utilises the full UV-Vis spectrum to characterise organic material and other components in wastewater that consume coagulant. Compass CPR is the most comprehensive control system available for ensuring wastewater treatment works can optimise dosing regimes and ensure compliance with both metal and phosphorus discharge consents is possible.
The premise is simple, if you don’t measure the coagulant demand of the incoming water, you’re always going to struggle to optimise dosing to ensure P removal AND comply with your metal consent limits.
Using the basis of co-occurrence, phosphorus can be calculated using statistical analysis combined with some initial spot sampling. If you understand the organics coming into the works and know the associated phosphorus levels, then you can correlate an output to a total phosphorus or orthophosphate concentration. A site that evaluated Compass CPR did just this, and Compass was able to output a phosphorus result with an R2 value of 0.84 which for control purposes has been demonstrated as suffi cient.
Coagulant dosing based on incoming phosphorus loading is just one part of the Compass CPR algorithm. If for example the majority of your coagulant demand is from organics and suspended solids, then measuring this is a crucial part to optimising coagulant dosing - without it, you’ll often be over- dosing ‘just in case’ the organic loading is high.
Phosphate colorimetry has been a good approach to coagulant dosing in many sites in the UK that have moved away from fl ow paced dosing, but it has its issues such as fouling, chemical consumption, maintenance and total cost of ownership (TOTEX). Now there is now a better approach which is; lower operating cost, signifi cantly more comprehensive and quicker to respond to raw wastewater changes.
