Ballast-Check 2 Approved by Saudi Aramco for Indicative Compliance Testing


Following detailed scientific and technical evaluation by the Environmental Protection Department of Saudi Aramco, the Turner Designs’ Ballast-Check 2 Handheld PAM Fluorometer is approved as a valid Ballast Water Sampling Instrument. Saudi Aramco will now accept results from certified technicians using Turner Designs Ballast-Check 2 Handheld PAM Fluorometer in addition to the other previously approved instrumentation. Saudi Aramco announced in August that all ships calling at its ports and terminals are required to provide ballast water test results to show compliance with the IMO BWM 2004 convention. It has been a challenge to sample all the arriving ships and Saudi Aramco looks forward to having additional


certified technicians and instrumentation performing the tests.


Ballast-Check™2 is a small, lightweight, highly durable handheld fluorometer ideal for quick indicative compliance checks of ballast water. Factory set, Ballast-Check 2 is ready for use right out of the box, no calibration necessary. Vaisala is working with power utilities, maintenance providers and asset owners to bring the first commercial units of its OptimusTM DGA Monitor for Transformers online.


As transformer fleets continue to age, the likelihood of faults and failure increases accordingly. Real-time condition monitoring enables asset owners to identify and address potential issues before they result in costly failure, reducing maintenance costs and boosting production and performance.

Vaisala’s Optimus monitors transformer oil for the presence of moisture and seven different gases. By tracking real-time levels of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethane, ethylene and acetylene, it gives asset owners a comprehensive understanding of the condition and health of a transformer, enabling them to make informed proactive maintenance decisions.


While many DGA systems available in the market source equipment and sensors from different manufacturers, the infrared sensor technology used in the Optimus has been developed in-house by Vaisala, benefitting from decades of industrial measurement expertise. This integrated approach, using only Vaisala-manufactured sensors and equipment, ensures optimal performance regardless of operational conditions.


Most significantly, Optimus uses vacuum gas extraction and hermetically sealed and protected optics to completely eliminate the false alarms of the kind that frequently afflict on-site DGA systems. Optimus ensures high quality gas selectivity through its use of vacuum gas extraction, which operates regardless of oil temperature or gas pressure, and by employing spectral scanning to aid selectivity.


The robust and durable device has components and piping that are made of stainless steel and aluminum, features a magnetic gear pump and valves, and relies on no consumables, which would require servicing or replacing. With a practical browser-based user interface, the device has no need for additional software.

CAC GAS & Instrumentation’s GDS-100 gas distribution system improves efficiency of calibration gas systems, reduces costs and reduces technician time when calibrating multiple gas detection instruments or analysers.


The GDS-100 provides a simple solution for distributing calibration gas to multiple instruments, calibration stations or docking stations.


Utilising our multiple-panel outlet panel, the GDS-100 provides calibration gas to all outlet points allowing the technician to calibrate multiple instruments at the same time. Multiple panels can be linked to provide an unlimited number of connection points. Each outlet point has a C10 valve which permits the connection of fixed flow, variable flow, on demand flow or pressure regulators.


As part of a docking station system, the GDS-100 can be designed to accommodate single or multiple gas mixtures. Outlets can be linked to one gas type or dedicated to different gas mixtures, whether corrosive or non-corrosive, as panels and all connections are stainless steel.


Additionally, the GDS-100 gas distribution systems can be designed so gas cylinders are in a safe location away from the outlet panels and calibration area.


By increasing the size of the calibration gas cylinder, the cost/ litre calibration gas cost is reduced, decreasing overall costs of maintenance and calibration.
