A new ASTM International guide will help people who take lubricant fluid samples from in-service gas and steam turbines – and related equipment – at power plants. “In-service fluid samples can be taken in a variety of ways that are not always representative of the active lubricating fluid,” says ASTM International member Bernie Hall of Checkfluid Inc. “The new standard provides guidelines as to where and how to take best-practice samples that are both representative and repeatable in a turbine operation.” The standard (D8112) was developed by ASTM International’s

ASTM International standards-development meetings are attended by a diverse group of industry representatives, including manufacturers, users, distributors, testing laboratories, academicians, consultants and government personnel. ASTM staff members are also present to provide any needed support or guidance related to ASTM policy. There is no charge to attend, and all are welcome. All attendees have a voice and are encouraged to participate in discussions.

committee on petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02).
According to Hall, samples consistently collected from an “active zone” provide a strong basis for accurate reporting, trending, and decision-making related to the equipment and the lubricant and hydraulic fluid within the equipment. The standard aims to help reliability managers improve the value of existing oil analysis programs by making it easier to safely collect representative, repeatable samples that can be accurately trended and acted upon as required.
(WK55121). The test method will help determine impurities in ethylene and propylene that could affect downstream polymer process operations.

Proposed Standard Will Support Diesel and Biodiesel Fuel Quality
A proposed ASTM International standard will help characterize the quality of diesel fuels and biodiesel blends. The proposed standard (WK51775) is being developed by the committee on petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02).
The proposed standard will be used to separate and determine the content of aromatics, nonaromatics, and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) in middle distillates, including biodiesel blends with up to 20 percent by volume of FAME.
“The knowledge of total content of saturates and aromatics in middle distillates is useful to investigate the effects of petroleum processing on production of various finished fuels,” said ASTM International member Yang Tingting a senior engineer at the SINOPEC Research Institute of Petroleum Processing in China. Tingting notes that the method described in the standard is time- saving and environmentally friendly. The proposed method could be used by refinery plants, diesel fuel producers, and analytical laboratories.
in ethylene and propylene. “The value of ethylene and propylene is partially based on purity, making accurate, low-level analysis and standardization important,” says member Shannon Coleman, an application scientist at Agilent Technologies. “This method analyzes permanent gasses such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide to levels as low as parts-per-billion.”
According to Coleman, a pulsed discharge helium ionization detector helps meet the challenge posed by analyzing gases at such levels. The new standard (soon to be published as D8098) was created by ASTM International’s committee on petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02).
Ethylene and propylene monomer producers, as well as polymer producers, will find the new standard most useful.
In addition to the new standard, the subcommittee on ethylene is developing a proposed standard for determining impurities in ethylene and propylene by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry
