Analytical Instrumentation High-pressure Foam Analysis Offers Targeted
Enhancement of Foam-aided Methods for Oil Production KRÜSS GmbH’s new High Pressure Foam Analyser – HPFA is the world’s first measuring instrument for the simultaneous capture of foam height and structure under high pressure. The HPFA is intended primarily for the tertiary oil production sector, where foams boost the efficiency of flooding procedures using gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen. The foam improves flow control, so that the oil can be extracted efficiently from the rock. The foams used must remain stable for a long period under the high pressure of the reservoirs and also withstand strong deformations during flows through porous rock. So the structure of the foam lamellae and the decay dynamics at high pressure are extremely relevant for the efficiency of the process.
The HPFA is equipped with high-resolution cameras that capture the foam volume and a video image of the foam lamellae in parallel during and after foaming. With the aid of the ADVANCE software’s real-time image evaluation the instrument measures the foamability and foam decay as well as changes in the absolute bubble size and its statistical distribution. The HPFA’s measuring cell operates at pressures up to 350 bar and temperatures up to 120 °C. During the analysis sensors permanently transmit measured values for pressure and temperature to the software.
The repeatability of foam formation is ensured by a filter through which the gas flows into the liquid under pressure. Variable filters with different pore sizes simulate the characteristic porosity of the respective rock and enable the modelling of foams with different bubble sizes.
When using the foam in the recovery process the aqueous foam in the reservoir often comes up against the foam inhibiting oil. This can trigger undesired foam decay. To date it has not been possible to test this effect under reservoir conditions. To make this possible, the HPFA comes equipped with a novel dosing unit that enables the dosing of any kind of liquid under pressure during the ongoing foam analysis.

British gas chromatography supplier, Ellutia, has opened a dedicated training centre at its new state-of-the-art facility in Ely, Cambridgeshire. The GC Excellence Academy will host training courses by RSC-approved independent trainer, Anthias Consulting, as well as Ellutia-led sessions by the company’s technical experts.
Kicking off the Academy’s programme, Anthias Consulting will be delivering its 1 day course ‘The absolute basics of GC and GC-MS’ and its more involved ‘5 day complete GC and GC-MS training’ in January 2018. Ellutia’s experts will offer a range of sessions, some of which will be bespoke for customers and others that will cover key application areas including: brewing, cannabis testing, food safety, petrochemical, and environmental analysis. Courses will also be offered on cutting edge technologies such as Ultra-Fast GC and MAX GC-FTIR.
Andrew James, Ellutia’s Marketing Director commented: “Mastering the use of modern gas chromatography instruments and maximising their potential is a key objective for scientists, students and researchers alike. Our deep heritage and expertise in GC techniques and our incredibly close relationships with customers mean that we place as much emphasis on equipping GC users with the insight they need, as we do on developing great products. We are looking forward to offering a range of courses at our new GC Excellence Academy to provide insights and training to customers, students and other scientists with the goal of advancing GC knowledge and expanding the use of this highly versatile technique.”
The Academy is housed at Ellutia’s new premises at Lancaster Way Business Park, Ely, which covers 15,000 sq. ft. The investment made in the site supports the company’s vision to be a world leader in the design and production of innovative and unique gas chromatography instruments.

Cold behaviour analysis finds applications in various areas. In diesel fuel analysis the Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) analysis is a key element and is measured according ASTM D6371, while in jet analysis Freezing Point analysis will be at the top of the list (ASTM D7153). In the lubricants and grease industry, Pour and Cloud Point analysis is performed frequently. In the market there is excellent automated equipment available such as the PAC OptiFZP for freezing point analysis who will perform accurate analysis according to the standard method.
Important analysis comes with a great risk, falling back on the standard method is not enough to ensure traceable results. To eliminate deviations of your analyser’s results compared to other equipment, European Lab Services (ELS) provides trustworthy verification of petroleum analysers such as the OptiFPP for CFPP analysis and makes sure each step of the ASTM D6371 or EN 116 is checked thoroughly. This verification is of enormous importance in order to benefit most from an analyser: the result accuracy and traceability is guaranteed, any discussion concerning the results is eliminated and the proactive verification approach will heavily reduce risk of downtime.
The on-site verification program for a CFPP analyser describes the calibration of the temperature sensor on 4 points in an accredited lab and verification of the display temperature, verification of suction time and differential pressure. The offsets are programmed and verified. The system will be evaluated with a standard reference product and a ISO 17025 certificate will be delivered.
European Lab Services (ELS) is the only company worldwide performing on-site ISO 17025 accredited verification for petroleum analysers for cold behaviour testing.
For more information about the importance of traceability in petroleum testing, ‘A World First – Verification of Petroleum Analysers According to ISO- Standards’ will give you more insight into this matter.
