Invest Hong Kong, which supports overseas and Mainland businesses to set up or expand in Hong Kong hosted a seminar in Qingdao (20th May) encouraging local enterprises to leverage on Hong Kong’s advantages in brand building, marketing and capital raising to facilitate their development into overseas markets. Co- organisers of the seminar included the Bureau of Commerce, Qingdao, and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Qingdao Sub-Council. Director-General of Investment Promotion, Mr Simon Galpin; Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Qingdao Sub-Council, Mr Feng Wenqing; and Vice Director General, Bureau of Commerce, Qingdao, Mr Wu Heng; delivered welcome speeches at the seminar.
In his remarks, Mr Galpin said, “Hong Kong and Qingdao are coastal port cities in prime geographical locations. In addition, Hong Kong, the world’s freest economy for 17 consecutive years, has a low and simple tax regime and allows the free flow of goods, information, capital and talent. It imposes no import or export tariffs on the majority of goods and is free of exchange controls. It is, therefore, the ideal launch pad for companies from Qingdao and other parts of the Mainland to explore overseas markets.” He also pointed out that the city is home to major international exhibitions providing the best platform for Mainland producers and suppliers to develop their business by showcasing their products and testing international waters.

Pharma and Bio events to boost Japanese markets Following the postponement of CPhI, ICSE, P-MEC and BioPh
Japan in Tokyo as a result of the recent earthquake, events organiser UBM live aims to reinvigorate the supply chain through rescheduled events being held at the Intex Osaka Exhibition Centre, 13-15 July 2011. UBM anticipates that the Osaka events will attract over 150 exhibitors and around 8,000 visitors. Japan's second largest city, Osaka is also the centre of the Kansai area, one of the main regions in Japan for pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing, with numerous Japanese and multinational pharmaceutical companies having their head office, factories and R&D centres located there, and in surrounding cities.

Nanostart Asia, a subsidiary of Nanostart AG has sold its ownership stake in Curiox Biosystems Pte Ltd – held through the Nanostart Singapore Early Stage Venture Fund – to the Zicom Group. Proceeds received by Nanostart have been returned to the fund for further investment.
"We already decided at a relatively early stage to sell our share in Curiox to the Zicom Group, an investor with a strategic interest. We remain convinced of the developmental potential of Curiox," explained Andreas Kröll, Managing Director of Nanostart Asia. "We carefully compared the additional financial costs and our earnings forecast for invested capital with our overall earnings goals."
Curiox Biosystems, which has developed a process for analysing aqueous bioprobes requiring only a fraction of the usually required testing quantity, was the first shareholding financed by Nanostart AG in 2007. Acquiring company, Zicom Group, a leading equipment manufacturer and niche engineering service provider has core expertise in mechanical, hydraulics, precision, and instrumentation engineering.
The government of Singapore has, through its National Research Foundation (NRF), invested SGD 10 million (approximately EUR 5 million) in this venture fund which is dedicated to bringing promising nanotechnology-based start-ups in Singapore to successful commercialisation.

BGI becomes CSP for Genomics System in China
Agilent Technologies has appointed major genomics research centre BGI, Certified Service Provider (CSP) status for its SureSelect XT Target Enrichment System for next-generation sequencing. Shenzhen-based BGI, said to be the largest genomic organisation in the world, becomes the first CSP in China certified for this system’s protocols including human all- exon, SureSelect indexing, DNA capture, RNA capture, kinome RNA and custom kits.
