PETRO-QUANT – The XRF Solution for Petrochemical Industry
Through the whole lifetime of petrochemical products (oil, polymers, chemicals) from the production to disposal, thermal treatment or use as secondary fuel, X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) is the most suited analytical method to support all those different applications. Bruker AXS has developed the specific XRF solution to support all petrochemical applications based on XRF: PETRO-QUANT. It provides quick and easy quantitative elemental analysis for process and quality control laboratories with the world class wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer S8 TIGER. PETRO-QUANT produces accurate and precise analytical results straight out of the box as the wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (WDXRF) is calibrated for a wide range of applications. It frees therefore the operator from time consuming calibration work, saving weeks of commissioning, to ensure the pay back begins from the very beginning.
For general analysis of hydrocarbon matrices, such as fuels and lubricants, the universal PETRO-QUANT calibration is used. It enables standardless analysis for all required elements (more than 30) from Sodium (Na) to Lead (Pb) covering concentrations from trace elements ppm) to major levels (%) (e.g. for S and Cl).
For compliance with international norms such as ASTM, DIN, IP or EN ISO, samples must be analysed against norm specific calibrations. PETRO-QUANT even supports these standards with detailed instructions and specific suites of calibration solutions.

New UV-Vis Spectrophotometer in Water Analysis Range
Faster Separation and Quantification of
Metabolites in Brassica Napus Rapeseeds Dionex is proud to announce a new platform developed by a customer to measure various metabolites in Brassica napus seeds. In cooperation with the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, the company has released Customer Application Note 109: Primary Metabolite Analysis of Plant Material Using a Triple Quadrupole MS Coupled to a Monolith Anion-Exchange Column. This method combines separation using the 1mm IonSwift™ MAX-100 anion-exchange column and ICS-3000 system and detection with the API 4000™ electrospray ionisation (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) system from AB SCIEX, providing a simple, rapid, specific, and sensitive method for the simultaneous detection and quantification of several primary metabolites involved in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and glycolysis pathway.
Compared to the previously used method, the IonSwift MAX-100 column facilitates shorter run times and helps achieve better sensitivity. This new platform combines Dionex ion chromatography (IC) and triple quadrupole MS. The IC tandem mass spectrometry (IC-MS/MS) technique provides a good tool to identify and quantify metabolites in a complex matrix. The biological pathways include many homologs and structural isomers with the same mass and analog fragmentations, so it is essential for the analysis to provide good resolution and specific identification of the different compounds.

Integrated LC/MS Sample Prep Integrated sample prep and LC/MS analysis with Agilent LC MassHunterTM
AB Sciex AnalystTM; and ThermoScientificTM XCalibur
; software is performed using
one integrated sequence table in combination with Gerstel MAESTRO software. Addition of standards, derivatisation reagents, or diluents; heating; cooling; mixing; centrifugation; SPE or dispersive SPE is performed followed by sample introduction. Sample Prep is performed in parallel with the ongoing LC-MS/MS analysis using MAESTRO PrepAhead for optimised throughput. Priority samples can be inserted into the running sequence without slowing or halting the workflow. MAESTRO operates independently or integrated with the LC/MS sequence table.

New Series Atomic Absorption Spectrometers to Address Metals Testing Challenges
PerkinElmer Inc announced the launch of its PinAAcle™ series atomic absorption spectrometers for determining the concentration of inorganic elements in a wide variety of sample types. As global regulations in the environmental, food and consumer products segments continue to increase in number, the demand for atomic absorption spectrometers continues to drive the need for more compact, high performance flame and graphite furnace systems. The PinAAcle series is a compact platform based on an innovative optical system that utilises state-of-the-art fiber optics. The PinAAcle series' configuration allows for compact design without compromising instrument performance in demanding applications that: meet global environmental regulations for drinking water; are suitable for clinical use in customer-validated applications such as screening for lead, and meet increasingly challenging requirements of food safety and nutritional labelling.
“PerkinElmer has a long history of innovation in atomic absorption, and a large installed base of atomic absorption instrumentation worldwide. Today, we’re taking atomic absorption performance to new levels,” said Dusty Tenney, President, Analytical Science and Laboratory Services, PerkinElmer. “Our PinAAcle series, with the proven longitudinal Zeeman furnace and cutting-edge optical design, helps researchers meet or exceed regulatory requirements and delivers improved accuracy for challenging matrices, making it essential for laboratories across the globe.”The PinAAcle AA series performance is enhanced when used with the PerkinElmer Lumina™ hollow cathode lamps and patented graphite tubes. The complete portfolio of specialised accessories, supplies and consumables deliver reliable performance, help reduce operating costs and maximise instrument uptime.
WinLab32™ software on the PinAAcle series makes it fast and easy to get from sample to results. By reducing the time required for method development, sample analysis and report generation, WinLab32 software streamlines every step of your workflow for enhanced laboratory productivity. The software completely automates furnace method development, and burner head alignment with gas flow optimisation ensuring safe, reproducible method setup.
