Single Cell Cloning Emerges from the Shadows

New Benchtop Evaporator Removes Even Highest Boiling Point Solvents

Cost Effective and Environmentally Friendly Refrigeration Solutions

Genevac has launched the EZ-2 Elite - a new addition to its popular EZ-2 evaporator range. The EZ-2 Elite is designed to remove high boiling point solvents and deliver enhanced solvent recovery thereby improving final drying of stubborn samples and enabling fast lyophilisation of HPLC fractions.

The high performance scroll pump used with the EZ-2 Elite delivers deeper vacuum than the diaphragm pumps used on other EZ-2 systems. This advance plus internal enhancements to heat vapour duct and system components enable the EZ-2 Elite to routinely evaporate challenging high boiling solvents including DMSO and NMP.

In addition

these enhancements ensure that such challenging solvents only condense in the SpeedTrap, and not anywhere else.

The SpeedTrap™ on the EZ-2 Elite works just like the other EZ-2 models but with the added benefit of automatic defrost and drain technology. The EZ-2 controls the SpeedTrap and the new Elite solvent collection vessel to allow mid-method defrosting and draining. This controlled draining facility enables very high levels of solvent recovery to be achieved. For example, when working with HPLC fractions, higher levels of dryness can be achieved by first draining the volatile organic solvent before tackling the water, allowing full vacuum to be used during final drying. Using the EZ-2 Elite SpeedTrap - the Genevac LyoSpeed™ method of fast lyophilisation of HPLC fractions is possible for the first time on an EZ-2 Evaporator.

Running the EZ-2 Elite is as simple as 1, 2, 3. Just load your samples, select maximum safe temperature for samples, select solvent type and hit start. Offering true unattended operation capability the EZ-2 Elite requires no user training, even a beginner can competently use the system within 5 minutes.

The EZ-2 Elite has been designed to concentrate or completely dry samples. The system will accommodate a wide selection of sample holders enabling evaporation from most common sample container formats including round-bottom flasks up to 500ml, tubes up to 160mm long, custom reaction blocks and shallow or deep-well microplates. To meet the need of the many life science companies switching their compound generation programmes from serial chemistry to parallel synthesis, the EZ-2 Elite is also able to take tubes, flasks and vials directly from the synthesis process, eliminating a manual handling step, increasing recoveries and removing the chance of cross contamination.

The Minichiller and Unichiller range from Huber offer more than 50 air and water-cooled models with cooling powers from 0.3 kW to 100 kW. When compared to conventional tap water, chillers offer better rates of efficiency, stable pressure and flow, and a constant cooling water temperature.

Furthermore these units reduce water consumption, making them an environmentally friendly refrigeration solution with low running costs.

Working temperatures from -20°C to +40°C enable them to be used for a variety of applications. Huber Chillers have an LED Display, illuminated level indicator and LED indicators for pump, cooling and heating.

All models are available as an ‘Advanced Version’ with an RS232 serial interface and external Pt100 sensor connection. All units can be fitted with additional heating, increasing the maximum working temperature to 100°C.

The more powerful Unichillers in the range offer professional functionality and control with a colour TFT Display. Besides the extensive safety features the powerful Unichillers offer a digital level indicator, 5 point calibration, external Pt100 sensor connection, Auto-Start, Calendar and clock functions as well as a RS232 serial interface connection.

With the Com.G@te analogue interface connections are supplied according to Namur standard, RS485 interface and a potential free contact can be retrofitted.

Unichillers fitted with optional heating become powerful process circulators for the mid temperature range from -20°C to +100°C with a temperature stability of ±0.1°C. Huber Unichillers are ideal for process cooling, back cooling of technical plants or as a centralised cooling water supply in laboratories.

Unichillers are designed to be used unsupervised in continual operation or in environmental temperatures up to 40°C. Unichillers are available with weather protection and winter operation to allow them to be located outdoors. Stronger pumps are available for systems with high-pressure drops, a maximum delivery pressure of 6 bar and flow rates of over 200 litres per minute are available. Almost all models operate with natural refrigerants.

Solentim highlighted the advanced capabilities of its leading cell imaging and analysis instrument, Cell Metric™, at the 22nd ESACT conference. Engineered to provide a high throughput workflow solution to screen for colonies from single cell cloning experiments, Cell Metric™ uses its proprietary non-image based focussing to find and locate all possible colonies by imaging the whole well, right up to the edge. The platform provides complete and accurate cell measurements, without removing the cells from the culture plate and without addition of stains and dyes. This ensures that cells are suitable for use in downstream experiments. With the ability to identify every healthy, viable cell clone from large multiwell screening projects and to track the visual history of the colonies back to single cells, the Cell Metric™ system delivers unparalleled confidence and return on investment. The proprietary imaging technology incorporated in the Cell Metric™ system overcomes the problems of shadowing and edge effects associated with current imagers. “Colonies often tend to form around the edge of the wells. Researchers have told us that they are missing 10-20% of their potentially high-value clones when using existing technologies,” commented Dr Ian Taylor, Solentim Sales and Marketing. “The Solentim Cell Metric™ platform is specifically designed to meet these problems head-on and ensures that these colonies are not missed.”

Cell Metric™ is programmed to provide real-time, user- defined metrics on the cell number, confluence or density, colony count and variations in cell morphology, including viability and mitotic index, and can rapidly process samples in lidded 6, 12, 24, 96 or 384 well microplates. Linking the Cell Metric™ system with a robotic arm and plate stacker provides a complete walk-away solution, with environmental control for large plate numbers and multi- user projects, or where longer term growth and kinetic studies are required.

“The Solentim team has an excellent history and pedigree in developing breakthrough technologies to automate key biological workflows,” continued Dr Taylor. “Cell Metric™ will boost efficiency in cloning and developing cell lines and a number of other applications within the cell culture laboratory. We are now inviting a select number of researchers, with defined problems for which Cell Metric™ could provide their solutio , to contact us and join our Early Adopter Programme.”
