62 Testing Portfolio Expanded with PCR-based Systems Covering the Entire Contamination Detection Spectrum

With the extension of its testing product range to include polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based systems, Hygiena now covers the entire spectrum of reliable contamination detection, from sample collection to screening of indicator organisms to specific microbial characterisation. These products are suitable for large and small manufacturers of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), as well as large corporate laboratories and contract testing facilities serving the food and beverage sector. The all-inclusive product line has been specifically designed to enable the timely detection of quality and safety issues, to give manufacturers the confidence that their quality assurance programs operate to the highest standards. The latest additions of the BAX®

System, RiboPrinter® System and Hygiena™ Lateral Flow System follow

the acquisition of DuPont Diagnostics (formerly known as Qualicon) and establish Hygiena as a leading provider of targeted solutions, including adenosine triphosphate (ATP), colorimetric, PCR and allergen monitoring systems.

Designed to detect harmful bacteria and other microbes in food and environmental samples, the award-winning BAX® System X5 and BAX® System analyses samples at the genetic level to provide excellent sensitivity, specificity

and accuracy. Highly reliable results dramatically decrease false positives, minimise re-testing and optimise speed of time-to-result with minimum hands-on time. With two options available, the BAX® RiboPrinter®

System Q7 meet the food testing needs of different laboratories, from small to high throughput. Hygiena’s System provides automated identification of unknown bacterial isolates, characterising them at or below the species level, enabling

users to implement highly targeted, effective and efficient safety and quality interventions. Completing the new range, the Hygiena Lateral Flow System uses test strips that combine optimised microbial antibodies and colloidal gold conjugate coated on the surface of a membrane. This approach enables faster pathogen screening results than conventional culture-based testing.

”Fast, reliable methods are required to meet the ever increasing challenges posed by new products with fresher exotic ingredients, new processes and packaging designs, shorter delivery times and extended shelf life,” said Dr Martin Easter, Chief Scientific Officer at Hygiena. “To meet this need, we have invested heavily in our research and development efforts to expand Hygiena’s testing product range with even more innovative solutions. Our comprehensive portfolio features a breadth of easy-to-use, robust, affordable systems designed to provide precise results users can rely on.”

New Series of Host Devices for Carbon Dioxide Probes Introduced

Laboratory Fume Hood Line Provides Protection for Every Application

Vaisala has launched a new host device for their carbon dioxide probes, the GMP251 and GMP252. This device, the Indigo 201, provides an optional display, analogue outputs and relays, and a wireless user interface accessed easily by mobile phone. Indigo allows for minimal downtime for calibration because probes can be easily switched out. Users can also calibrate the probe with the help of Indigo 201.

The GMP251 and GMP252 CO2 probes are ideal for use in harsh and humid environments, including life science incubators, cold storages, and demanding HVAC applications.

“Today, carbon dioxide is more and more often used, for example, in refrigeration systems, because it is more environmental friendly and has a lower impact on global warming than the restricted CFC, HCFC and HFC refrigerants,” said Maria Uusimaa, Product Manager at Vaisala.

HEMCO UniFlow Laboratory Fume Hoods are the most complete line of fume hoods in the industry. UniFlow AireStream low flow high performance fume hoods feature an exclusive all composite resin construction that is chemical resistant, flame retardant, lightweight, and meets UL 1805, SEFA 1, Ashrae 110, and ANSI Z9.5 standards.

These hoods have a moulded one piece seamless composite resin interior fume chamber that has all coved corners and is white for superior light reflectivity. Available in sizes from 30” to 96” wide and in depths of 24” to 48”, and in CAV (air bypass) or VAV (restricted bypass) models. A wide selection of accessories and services are optional to meet exact user requirements.

Other UniFlow Fume Hoods are engineered and built for specialty application such as perchloric acid that has either a type 316 stainless steel or PVC welded one piece interior fume chamber including work surface and rear drain trough, acid digestion that has an HDPE welded one piece interior fume chamber including work surface and optional rear drain trough, radioisotope that has a type 304 stainless steel welded one piece interior fume chamber including work surface, and trace metals that has a polypropylene welded one piece interior fume chamber including the work surface. Each of these fume hoods would still have the composite resin exterior superstructure in lieu of traditional painted steel.

Support base cabinets, heavy duty tables and either epoxy resin, phenolic resin or stainless steel dished work surfaces are offered to complete the UniFlow fume hood installation. Additional lab furniture can be designed with the fume hoods including sinks, faucets, wall cabinets to complete the laboratory.
