Metrohm is pleased to offer turnkey solutions for the quality control of commodities such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, polyols, palm oil, and wood pulp by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). Based on dedicated spectral databases and a pre-calibration models, these solutions enable manufacturers to reduce the cost of their daily routine analysis while improving the quality of their products.


Key quality parameters for the above mentioned commodities are still often determined by time consuming physical or wet chemical methods involving complex sample preparation.


NIRS, on the other hand, is a non-destructive analytical technology that requires neither chemicals nor sample preparation, it can even be used by non-chemists, and provides results in less than a minute. Furthermore, multiple chemical and physical parameters can be determined simultaneously with a single measurement. The combined benefits of this technology make NIRS the ideal solution for a large number of daily QA/QC measurements or continuous process analysis. Metrohm offers pre-calibrations for the following products: gasoline , diesel, jet fuel, polyols, palm oil, wood pulp.

New Version of ASTM D664 Cuts Solvent Use by 50%


Metrohm is pleased to announce that the ASTM released a new version of ASTM D664 for the potentiometric determination of acid number. The new version offers the possibility to reduce the required amount of solvent from 125 mL to 60 mL. Metrohm together with industry leaders investigated and proposed this possibility in a contribution towards green chemistry.


The acid number (AN) is a measure for acidic compounds in petroleum products. AN is crucial to assure the quality of petroleum products and is an important parameter in corrosion control.


AN is usually determined by potentiometric titration in nonaqueous solvent mixtures (see Metrohm AB- 404). While ASTM D664 previously stipulated the use of 125 mL solvent per sample, the new version now offers the possibility to work with only 60 mL. This considerable reduction enables laboratories to save costs, reduce waste and thus contribute to a greener chemistry.

CELEBRATE WITH THE


New ASTM Method Simplifies Determination of Kjeldahl Nitrogen


The ASTM recently published method D8001 describing the determination of total nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and total phosphorous. The new method applies persulfate digestion with subsequent determination of Kjeldahl nitrogen by ion chromatography; no prior distillation of the matrix is required.


Total Kjeldahl and total nitrogen are commonly determined by titration after distillation of the digestion mixture to release the ammonia. The new ASTM D8001 offers an alternative applying persulfate digestion followed by ion chromatographic separation and conductivity detection with sequential suppression. The new method is described by Metrohm Application Note S-358 which can be downloaded free of charge.
