Yorkville Area Chamber of
Commerce Celebrating its 50th Anniversary 1971-2021
Te Yorkville Area Chamber of
Commerce filed its incorporation papers on Aug. 17, 1971 with 10 members on its Board of Directors: Dean Tanepohn, Kenneth Prickett, Tracey Flint, James Hall, Ellsworth Windett, Leon Lies, Fred Schneider, Robert Mahoney, John Behrens and Larry Langland. Greg Millen of Heritage Cabinetry & Design, who joined the Chamber in the late 1990’s, recently stepped down from the Chamber Board after serving almost
15 years, including two terms as president. “My experience with the Chamber
has been very amazing,” he said. “Tere are so many ways it’s helped our business and impacted my life.” In addition to approving and
overseeing the Chamber budget, Greg says board members also recruit staff. As president, Greg hired Executive Director Sherri Farley. Greg also helped start Chamber
sponsored events, like Biz Boo at Halloween, and Kentucky Derby theme events, a Halloween egg hunt, and helped promote the downtown Christmas walk and tree-lighting ceremony.
“Te Chamber can unite the city and businesses and churches, even our
schools. Our superintendent of schools sits in at our meetings. How powerful is that?” He added that although he has stepped down from the Chamber, he is excited for what lays ahead for it. “We have
a great board, with some
Ambassadors, Leads Groups, the City,
along
inspiring schools,
churches, and most importantly members and patrons of the community that support each other. . . Te Chamber is a melting pot.” Heather
Johnson of Rush- Copley Medical Center joined the Chamber Board in December 2020. “Right now I
am just trying to acclimate into the Board, to understand the different personalities, and see where I can contribute best,” she says. Heather, a Yorkville resident, became a Chamber member four years ago, and says she is happy at her recent Board appointment. “I have so much more invested being on the Board, because the decisions we make impact me as a community member.”
