SENIORS Senior Services Associates 908 Game Farm Rd., Yorkville

630-542-6994 www.seniorserviceassoc.org “Tis is a day to day changing situation,” says Senior

Services Associates Executive Director Micki Miller of her organization’s response to the Covid 19 pandemic. As of mid-March, Senior Services had not been given the go-ahead to reopen, so all interaction with seniors was over the phone, except for Adult Protective Services. “Tey get all those abuse and financial exploitation cases,” she explained. “Seniors who are facing actual physical abuse and have to be hospitalized or have to go into guardianships are the most severe cases. Tey can call our office directly.” Micki said the Obbudsmen also since mid-February are back in the field doing social distancing visits in long-term care facilities.

“Each place has to be Covid-

free before we can be let in,” she said.”Tey are advocates for the residents. Tey make sure they are taken care of and their rights are preserved.” One of Senior Services’ priorities early in 2021 was making it possible for all seniors to get registered to be vaccinated. “We’ve been working really hard with all health departments to help seniors who don’t have electronics. It’s been a big issue, especially in other counties. We were getting thousands of calls a day. So we set up our own email sites so we could get seniors registered. We’ve also distributed some 400 tablets.” To help seniors not feel isolated during the pandemic,

Valentines Party, and a St. Patrick’s Day party with entertainers,” Micki said. “We did a Tanksgiving meal drive-through with the Knights of Columbus and law enforcement and we did the same for Christmas.” During March and April at the

Yorkville office AARP provided tax assistance via drive through for people they had served before. Micki said that was such a gift to the seniors, to have AARP participating again.

A group of five women were meeting for exercise sessions at the Yorkville facility at the beginning of the year. Tey practiced social

distancing and had temperature scans. Micki says they will stay with small things and work their way up to larger groups. ”We’ve been trying to keep things as normal as possible while still social distancing,” Micki says. “We’ve been told that by fall we should be able to hold in-person events. We want to get back to where we can all be together again.”
