women’s clothing, nursery baby gifts and accessories, and toys and books are some of the items that Brigitte Shepard offers for sale at her store, Hummingbird in a Shoebox. “Te name was given to me by my husband Mike because he says I’m like a hummingbird and the name just stuck, and my starting space was the size of a shoebox,” Brigitte explains. Te Yorkville shop was not her first. After the birth of her daughter in 2011, she says she started selling clothing online, and then seven years ago opened a store in Batavia, but that eventually closed and Brigitte went into marketing. “But I always wanted to come back to it,” Brigitte says. “I fell in love with the cute designs of children’s clothing. When my marketing job was eliminated last October, I decided to say ok, we will try. I’m kind of like the type of person, if I feel like I want to do something, I do it. I figure it out.” Brigitte says the clothing in her store is not the kind of item one would find in Target. Tey are not massed produced. “Tey are a limited run, something you’d find in a boutique. Te material is very soft in much of the clothing I carry. Some of it is organic. Versatile. I also have little wooden blocks, stuffed animals, rattles, baby’s swaddles and blankets, teether and bows and hats.” She says she plans in May to expand her women’s line to add blouses, some dresses, maybe kimonos, maybe jewelry, and more varieties of t-shirts to encourage women without children to stop in. Some people may think her crazy for opening a shop during a pandemic, she admits, but she says foot traffic has been “mildly steady.” “I took a leap of faith,” she says. “Tis is a true, unique little downtown boutique and Yorkville is a perfect area.”
