YORKVILLE CUSD 115 From Dr. Timothy Shimp, superintendent

“Te truth is, for kids K-12, one of the safest places they can be, from our perspective, is to remain in school, and it’s really important that following the data, we make sure we don’t make emotional decisions about what to close and what not to close,” noted CDC Director Robert Redfield in early November. “I’m here to say clearly the data

strongly supports that K-12 schools— as well as institutes of higher learning— really are not where we’re having our challenges.” Trough the hard work and dedication of District 115 employees and families, Yorkville CUSD 115 was able to offer its parents a choice of how they wanted their children to attend the 2020-2021 school year (on-site, virtual, or a combination of the two). We are proud of the efforts we put

towards creating and implementing a successful educational system that enabled students to develop critical

connections with their teachers and classmates, and provided safe and caring environments that addressed students’ social-emotional concerns and physical wellbeing. Extensive work was done during the summer months to ensure essential mitigation strategies were in place

to allow for on-site instruction. Tese strategies included face masks and other personal protective equipment; physical distancing; daily health certifications for anyone on a school campus; new health procedures and contact tracing; extensive cleaning and disinfection; and handwashing. District 115 worked closely

with the Kendall County Health Department to monitor regional, county, and local/school cases and indicators and created a COVID-19 database to report positive cases on its website.

As space would allow, throughout

the year the district was able to grant parent requests for their children

to return to learning on campus. Te effort to allow more students to attend school on-site was assisted by the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Public Health in March when they released new guidelines reducing the physical distancing guidelines between students. Te guidelines took into consideration lessons learned about the transmission of the virus within schools. As noted by State Superintendent Carmen I. Ayala, the revision “reinforces that schools are an important part of community infrastructure, that in-person instruction promotes learning recovery along with the well-being of students and families, and that schools therefore ‘should be the last settings to close … and the first to reopen when they can do so safely.’”

Te success of District 115 during

this very difficult year can be attributed to the strong supportive partnership between the district and those within the communities that it serves, as well as the dedication of district employees who were tenacious in serving as a source of strength as students worked through any academic and emotional challenges.
