Unit 3 Structural failure Learner’s Book page 29 Unit overview
In this unit learners will learn how forces can affect and damage structures. Their effects can cause the structure to be damaged in one or more of the following ways: • fracture or break • bend • twist • topple over.
Teaching guidelines
• Show the learners an X-ray of a broken bone and ask if any of them have ever broken a bone. Ask them to tell the class what happened and how it affected what they were able to do while the bone was healing. When a bone breaks, we say that it has been fractured. The same term is used when a structural member breaks.
• Begin to talk about members breaking in a structure. • Ask how that is likely to affect the structure as a whole. It will depend on how important a function that member has in the structure.
• An example: If an arm breaks on a chair, it does not mean that the chair cannot be sat on. If the leg on the chair breaks, then it is of no further use for the task it was designed for.
