• Use pictures to help identify different types of bridges. • Explain that all bridges are built for a specific reason. • Discuss the types of materials needed to build different types of bridges.


Background knowledge


Some parts of a bridge are under compression and some will be under tension. This enables the bridge to withstand the forces applied on it. There will be other forces such as torsion and bending at work as well but these will vary according to the type of structure.

• This is a group activity. • There are three suggested shapes shown in the Learner’s Book to fold the paper but your learners may come up with other ideas. Encourage them to do this and to test their ideas.


Background knowledge


Folding the corrugated paper can be achieved by placing a line of pencils parallel to one another with a slight space on either side of each pencil. Then place the paper on top of the pencil and using another pencil, press the paper down into the gaps between your line of pencils.
