Test 3-D shapes for strength Learner’s Book page 19 Guidelines to implement this activity


• This is a group activity. • Divide the learners into groups of 3–4. • Make sure that the learners have the following:


– 24 drinking straws, about 100 mm long – four drinking straws, about 140 mm long – modelling clay – a piece of cardboard 110 × 110 mm – weights or books to act as a load


Background knowledge


1 Make two cubes using the 100 mm straws. 2 Stand the cubes on a table and place a piece of card on top of them. 3 Place the weights or the books on top of the card. Add them one at a time and see how many can be supported before the cubes collapse.


4 Think about how you can use the four 140 mm straws to strengthen your cube.
