Tackling loneliness in lockdown
Residents in ExtraCare Charitable Trust’s retirement communities have been offered a lifeline to tackle lockdown loneliness thanks to a donation from Nottinghamshire-based Total Integrated Solutions (TIS). The integrated safety and security solutions provider
has enabled ExtraCare – a charity which creates better lives for elderly people – to install high-speed Wi-Fi across its 20 villages and schemes, benefitting more than 4,000 residents. In the past year, the elderly population has had less opportunity for face-to-face socialising with family and friends, with even GP consultations now often only possible via video or phone. James Twigg, managing director and executive team chair at TIS, said: “We have been supporting the
ExtraCare Charitable Trust for over nine years by ensuring its critical life safety and security systems are compliant and well maintained. “We are extremely proud to be able to further
support the charity by funding this endeavour. It’s been a difficult year for the entire country but none more so than the elderly, and to know we are helping them keep in touch with their friends and family is beyond words.” The high-speed Wi-Fi allows residents – who are on
average 82 years old – to exploit the benefits of digital technology that those of a younger age have relied on to feel connected during lockdown. Henriette Lyttle-Breukelaar, executive director of
marketing and innovation at ExtraCare Charitable Trust, said: “The generosity will make a real difference to our charity and residents.”
continuing throughout March, the NTU events and conferencing team will provide access to the Dryden building on the university’s city campus free of charge to be used as a training centre. About 100 volunteers a day
will be trained at NTU. Jill Miles, head of
operational planning and delivery at Nottingham Trent University, said: “We are very proud to open our doors to St John Ambulance to deliver this important training as part of the NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme. “Our Dryden facilities will
allow St John Ambulance to train up to 100 volunteers a day and we applaud all the vaccination volunteers stepping up to take part in the fight against this pandemic.”
