Business Beyond Brexit survey
Peak Translations is asking for views from East Midlands businesses to shape its services in response to the changing exporting landscape since the UK’s departure from the EU. The Whaley Bridge company
has created a “Business Beyond Brexit” survey and is asking for businesses that currently export, or plan to export, in overseas markets to share their thoughts, experiences and concerns. Peak Translations managing
director Helen Provart said: “Now more than ever, the world needs clear communications. By better understanding where our resources might be best placed, we’ll be in a very strong position to support the local exporting community to capitalise on the opportunities with which they’re presented, at the same time overcoming any immediate hurdles they face as the new agreements bed in.”

University technology to transform drinks industry
Researchers at Loughborough University have developed new technology that provides rapid screening of micro-organisms in drinks – cutting the turnaround time from the current practice of up to five days to under one hour. The device – which deploys
resistive pulse sensing – is being launched by a university spin-out company, Figura Analytics, for use within the soft drinks industry to test for contaminants.
‘We are confident that this will be the start of a number of high potential applications’
The industry has historically
tested products during the manufacturing process for biological abnormalities – such as bacteria, yeast and fungi – and foreign bodies by taking samples and sending them to a lab to grow cultures, or via optical techniques. This takes time – an average of three to five days for a
microbiological test – is costly and, in the case of optical techniques, lacks specificity. Not only is the new technology significantly faster, it can also identify things that can’t currently be tested for, such as conductivity, flavour bleed and microplastics. The technology is low cost, easy to assemble and can be deployed in other sectors, including
environmental and healthcare. Technology lead Dr Mark Platt
said: “We’re proud to have just secured Minerva PitchUP funding in addition to Innovate UK funding to take the technology forward within the drinks industry, but we are confident that this will be the start of a number of high potential applications where we can deliver real impact.”
