Multimodal texts
Multimodal texts include visual elements such as images, drawings, photographs, graphs or tables. These texts have messages that are shown to the reader through the visual elements as well as the words. Different multimodal texts use particular language and words to get their message across. The layout of a multimodal text helps you to “read” the text correctly, for example in a comic strip each event happens within a frame.

You will need to work in groups and decide which roles you want to play depending on the scenes you are going to act out. Remember that when you role-play a situation you need to act and talk like the characters or roles you are playing.

Language structure and conventions: participles and gerunds
Participles and gerunds
Participles use an auxiliary verb (“is”, “are”, “was”, “were”) and end with “–ing”. For example: She is reading. They are reading. She was reading. They were reading. However, sometimes these “–ing” words are used as nouns. When this happens, the words act as gerunds rather than infinitive verbs. For example: Reading is fun. Walking is good exercise. Stealing is a crime.
Activity 7: Use participles and gerunds
1 Change the verb given in brackets to a participle with the correct auxiliary verb. a. I told the teacher that he (bully) me yesterday. b. They (fight) today because they disagreed about telling the teacher what had happened.
c. I (apologise) for being a bully, when she hit me.
2 Use the verbs in the margin as gerunds in the sentences below: a. ______ away is not cowardly; it prevents violence. b. ______ someone is always wrong. c. ______ is a big problem in schools.
Listening and speaking: Group discussion of multimodal texts
Multimodal texts makes use of both visual and written text, for example a cartoon or an advertisement. When you read a multimodal text you need to consider the images and visual elements of the text as well as the words that are included.
Activity 8: Discuss a multimodal text
Multimodal texts are created for different reasons, for example enjoyment and entertainment (cartoons or comics), to persuade people to buy products (advertisements) and to give information (posters and flyers). You are going to discuss a comic strip.
