FET PHASE

Most of us experience stress at exam time, whether we are well prepared or not. Then there is another stressful period when we wait for the results to come out.

Read the following case study about Grade 12 learners waiting for their results.

CASE STUDY Anxiety levels rise as matrics wait for results

Lifeline centres are receiving hundreds of phone calls from worried matric learners and their parents. Results are to be released on 29 December. “We are finding that, with the festive season and the announcement of the matric results, anxiety in households tends to increase,” said a spokesperson for Lifeline. “Many anxious parents are calling in and when they are anxious and nervous it raises the stress levels in the family. Society places a lot of pressure on matrics.” A spokesperson for the SA Depression and Anxiety Group also said there was a peak in calls from matrics expecting their end-of-year results. Among the concerns raised by anxious matrics was the fear of disappointing their families. They were embarrassed at the prospect of failure. Other concerns were lack of money for tertiary education and worries about getting bursaries. “Parents need to be very supportive and offer solutions. If their children fail they need to be given alternatives,” said the spokesperson. Childline can be reached on the tollfree number 0800 055 555 and the SA Depression and Anxiety Group on 0800 567 567.
