ABB celebrates 21 years of leadership in DCS

Distributed control systems (DCS) are central to automation in the energy and process industries, playing a key role within Industry 4.0 and representing a global market valued at $15 billion. The report published by the

nearest DCS competitor. Commenting on the report,

Bernhard Eschermann, chief technology officer at ABB Industrial Automation, said: “During more robust economic times, process industry producers often rely on new production machinery to increase output. In the current highly demanding economic environment, customers are squeezing as much value as they can out of existing assets, running as efficiently as possible to protect profit margins. Maximising assets and efficiencies is what DCS do.”

Expansion for Graphic Packaging International’s R&D centre

Food manufacturer Kraft Heinz is trialling a fibre-based microwavable cup for on-the-go snacks. The Pittsburgh-based firm didn’t reveal who it is collaborating with in the development of the cup but the process is advanced enough for a launch later in 2021 for Kraft Mac & Cheese Shapes. Kraft Heinz says the design change to fibre is to reduce plastic use and to be both recyclable and compostable in industrial composting facilities. It will also eliminate the plastic label with the application of direct print technology.

January/February 2021 “Consumers are at the heart

of everything we do and we know they’re looking for more sustainable packaging options without sacrificing the convenience or taste they love from Kraft Mac & Cheese,” said Matt Carpenter, marketing director at Kraft Heinz. The fibre-based packaging supports the Kraft Heinz Company’s strategy for responsible, sustainable practices extending to every facet of its business including a commitment that aims to make 100 per cent recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025.

Graphic Packaging International (GPI), the paper-based packaging supplier for the food, beverage, food-service and consumer products segments, is expanding its global research and development centre in Louisville, Colorado. The facility is growing with a focus on innovating with customers to support strategic growth initiatives including plastic substitution. Alternatives for plastic

packaging using renewable and recyclable paperboard include KeelClip, a paperboard carrier for beverage cans to replace plastic rings and shrink film, and PaperSeal, a barrier-lined paperboard tray to replace plastic trays for meat, seafood and produce. “This expansion demonstrates

concepts not only for our customers and their end users, but for the environment as well,” said Ricardo De Genova, Graphic Packaging’s senior vice president of global innovation and new business development. “Our expert team of chemists, engineers and designers is dedicated to improving the environmental profile and performance of our products and to meeting consumer needs for convenience, health and enhanced experiences.” The 30 per cent enlarged

research and development centre is customer-centric and equipped to perform trials, develop prototypes and host seminars. The centre is also fully equipped to conduct state-of-the-art structural and performance testing for new packaging designs.
