Ropeless threading is made safer and more efficient


A


n automated process for the ropeless threading of the tail of a paper web in


two-tier dryer sections that is more efficient and safe has been developed by Voith. Already being used at a paper mill in China, the TailStabilizer overcomes what has been until now been a complicated and time- consuming process that presents safety risks and involves more maintenance following shutdowns or breaks in the dryer section. “The fact that we are now able to


offer ropeless threading to paper manufacturers that produce grades with particularly high basis weights in two-tier dryer sections is an important milestone for us and is unparalleled in the industry,” says Sebastian Meuthen, paper machine products and service manager at Voith. “The system is extremely reliable and, in particular, improves

safety for the operating personnel.” Part of the Voith Prevo range of


tail threading and cutting systems, TailStabilizer can be adapted for any application and is said to be easy to install. The system is especially suitable for rebuilds and optimisation of existing threading systems. Thanks to its flexibility, the


TailStabilizer technology offers a large operating window with basis weights of up to 300g per sqm. A specially-developed peel-up


component, positioned as close as possible to the roll, ensures maximum peeling effect. The optimised arrangement of multi- row air nozzles and air deflectors


lifts the tail from the drying cylinders and quickly attaches it to the TailStabilizer to transport it from there to the next drying cylinder. As a result, the process also minimises shredding. Because it works without contact it also avoids wear and unnecessary maintenance.


Faster and more precise porosity measurement


Paper mills are being offered a proven technology that stabilises the process of improving roll quality when measuring online porosity following the creation of a partnership between ABB and ACA Systems, the Finnish-based supplier of porosity sensors. The single-point ACA Permi sensor uses a continuous air flow method that is said to be 50 to 100 times faster than other systems available on the market to reduce air permeance variations, enabling better product quality, optimised energy usage and reduced raw material costs. The multiple advanced


calibration features improve the accuracy of the measurements while also enabling faster grade changes, improving overall runnability. This accuracy means that the level of fines can be better controlled while monitoring the direct effect of refining, retention, broke addition and vacuum levels. In contrast to laboratory measurements that take five to 10 points from the produced roll, ACA Permi measures more than 10,000 points in real time to provide a statistical analysis on the quality of the roll.


Under the partnership, ABB will


supply the ACA Permi to customers as the porosity option within its own portfolio. It is designed to be used in paper mills with requirements for online porosity measurement as a standalone solution or as part of the quality control systems (QCS) package. Vesa Kukkamo, chief executive of


ACA Systems, commented: “Our customers have reported faster grade change times of between 15 and 50 per cent when controlling the roll quality with ACA Permi. This is a major benefit for operators focused on minimising production loss and maximising return on investment.”
