knew us from previous projects. We decided together that the best approach to completing and commissioning this mill was to start with an audit just to check everything that is installed there. We needed to know the status of every part of the entire machine and then find out what was missing and what needs to be added or changed. Over a period of 10 weeks, we prepared an audit report with many of our experts, and this was the basis for the project itself. There are hundreds of thousands of bits and pieces here and not even a genius like Tony Stark would be able to do everything alone. A great team was needed to realise this project, and we at Andritz have this team, consisting of people from Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria and China. As for me, I’m not a Tony Stark, but as an Andritz team we are. You cannot imagine how
many documents and cables are needed and how much engineering work has to be done to get this mill running. Our effort here is almost the

same as building a new mill. The brainwork is the same, of course the machines are here, but we still have to configure the whole thing and restore it to working condition. The equipment itself that is installed here is in very good condition, but it is not state- of-the-art in every detail. That’s why we are modernising it to make it work in the best possible way.
Q: Given the conditions this is, in fact, a unique project. Do you like such challenging projects, and why? JO: We have the chance to prove ourselves and show once again that we are capable of starting up and commissioning a complete line that makes a piece of wood into a finished product that can be sold to the customer, even if the equipment installed has been sourced from different manufacturers. This project is really challenging, and personally, I like that. We are forced here to take quick and good decisions in a very short time, and this takes us out of our comfort zone. But if you
are an engineer or a technician, this is exactly what you want to have. You see the challenge, you see the progress every day, and finally you reach the target. That is what keeps you motivated and, of course, shows once again that your company is a world market leader.
Q: Can you describe the new production line in more detail? What performance parameters are you planning to achieve? RR: In Belarus, more than 40 per cent of the territory is covered by forests. And one important pre-condition for modernisation
for board quality such as thickness, brightness, and smoothness – you need to have a certain degree of smoothness so that you can use cardboard for colour printing. These quality performance parameters are defined in our contract, and we intend to achieve them together, with Andritz experience to support us and ensure that we have the quality of board to be competitive and successful in the global market.
Q: Could you tell us more about the DCS that will be used at the mill? JO: An Andritz solution will be used for the DCS. The DCS is the mill’s brain, and all the characteristics and parameters of the machines are installed there, so it tells the equipment what it has to do, how fast it has to run,
