The XcelLine paper machine built by Voith has capacity to produce 400,000 tons of high- performance lightweight recycled containerboard and increases Grupo Gondi’s total paper making capacity to 1.1 million tons a year. Eduardo Posada, chief executive of Grupo Gondi, commented at the start up in January: “The plant is one of the most modern recycling board mills in Latin America. The start-up of PM7 is an important step for us. Together with Voith, we will continue our efforts to increase our market position for high- performance lightweight recycled containerboard in Mexico and Latin America with innovative production solutions.”

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic,
Voith was able to hand over the line to Grupo Gondi to its satisfaction. “We were only able to achieve this because of the successful cooperation of the entire team and the trusting partnership between Voith and
Grupo Gondi,” said Christian Deide, project manager at Voith Paper. “With the PM7, Voith contributes to Latin America’s sustainable paper production.” Voith supplied the complete
production line, including a BlueLine stock preparation
line with conveying and reject handling, the XcelLine paper machine, as well as the MCS, DCS and QCS automation systems. The paper machine, with a working width of 6,600 mm at the reel and a design speed of 1,200 m/ min, produces testliner and corrugating medium with basis weights ranging from 90 to 250 g/sqm. When the project was announced in 2017, the PM7 project was planned to represent an investment of US$300 million. Originally, commissioning was expected at the end of 2019. Grupo Gondi was founded in 1954 and currently employs more than 7,800 people at 14 converting plants with seven paper machines producing recycled products including paper, corrugated boxes, pre-printed corrugated boxes and solid fibre containers, folding containers, micro-corrugated boxes and digital boxes.
Drying section upgrade for Aviretta in Germany
German containerboard manufacturer Aviretta has had the post-dryer section on one of its paper machines rebuilt by Toscotec. The Italian equipment specialist
met the original schedule on target despite Covid-19 restrictions. At Aviretta’s Ettringen mill in
Bavaria, for the PM4, which produces fluting from 60 to 130gsm, Toscotec supplied nine TT SteelDryers of over a seven- metre face width equipped with insulation system. One TT

SteelDryer also features a ceramic/ Teflon cover to ensure cleanliness following the size press. The contract included the
provision of condensate spoiler bars, steam joints, bearings and
housings, and spares. Toscotec provided Aviretta with a complete set of services, including engineering, disassembly, erection, commissioning, and start-up assistance.
Aviretta’s project manager Thomas Reibelt commented: “The cooperation with Toscotec was very good right from the beginning. We are happy to have worked with a supplier who has such a significant experience with rebuilds. The new TT SteelDryers have been performing very well since start-up, with good results in drying capacity and energy efficiency.” Aviretta makes about 170,000
tonnes of containerboard a year from 100 per cent recovered fibres certified to FSC standards.
