Digital upgrade for Norske Skog Skogn’s newsprint mill


A


comprehensive new digital platform for the Norske Skog Skogn’s newsprint


mill in Norway is being installed by ABB, to provide the catalyst for continuous improvement initiatives. The Ability Manufacturing


Execution System (MES) will be operational by April 2021, with ABB providing five years of support as the mill undertakes its journey towards digitalisation and ‘smart’ operations. With three paper machines and an annual capacity for 520,000 tons, Norske Skog Skogn is one of Europe’s largest newsprint manufacturers. As newsprint production capacity declines across Europe with several newsprint machine closures, Norske Skog Skogn plans to serve the printing industry by utilising digitalisation to optimise production, increase quality yield and to provide better customer service. When paired with the OEE module, to identify ways to increase productivity, mills have the capability to leverage the detailed information to find areas for improvement and prioritise actions based on improvement potential analysis. Paper machine grade conversion rebuild for Cascades in Virginia


A newsprint line at the Bear Island mill operated by Cascades in Virginia, USA, is being extensively rebuilt by Valmet to produce high-quality, lightweight, 100 per cent recycled linerboard and medium grades for the North American market.

The mill’s PM1 will also have its automation and services upgraded to become an 8,500- mm wide (wire) containerboard machine to produce recycled linerboard and medium grades with a basis weight range of 88-176 g/sqm. With a design speed of 1,370 m/min, the annual


capacity will be 465,000 short tons.


The start-up of the rebuilt paper machine is scheduled for the end of 2022. Mike Gray, vice president
