Poole Osprey Project
It’s the month we’ve all been waiting for! When the dream of seeing ospreys attempt to breed in Dorset again for the fi rst time in two centuries could become a reality…
All ospreys are made equal, but there’s one very special individual who is quickly becoming the star of the Poole Harbour project. Young male LS7 was one of the original cohort of eight

chicks translocated from Scotland in 2017, and he was the best of the bunch: fi rst to fl edge, to migrate, and incredibly to be spotted in West Africa! Then in 2019 he smashed another milestone, becoming our fi rst translocated bird to return to the UK. And his reappearance couldn’t have been more timely, as he wasn’t the only osprey present in Poole Harbour…
Adult female CJ7 was born in Rutland Water in 2015, and fi rst visited Poole Harbour as a two-year-old in 2017, at precisely the same time as our fi rst cohort of young ospreys (including LS7) were released into the area. It wasn’t long before she found the chicks, and starting visiting them daily. This chance encounter had an enormous impact on her behaviour, and every summer since she has returned to Poole Harbour, clearly hoping to raise her own brood. On 1 April 2019 she landed on the nest in the Middlebere Channel, and to our delight was soon adding sticks! And yet her long wait for a mate continued.
So when LS7 landed on another nest on 12 June CJ7 pounced on him, and hardly let him out of her sight again until the end of August. In that time they formed a strong bond, did plenty of nest building, and even had a brief go at mating! All this suggests that 2020 could be the year they’ll make their fi rst breeding attempt, and in preparation we’ve set up a livestream camera at their favourite nest, viewable on our website.
We’re awaiting their return this month with baited breath, and will bring you the latest updates in next month’s issue!
