Community Speedwatch Making Corfe Mullen Safer
February was not a good month for us. We planned five sessions, four were rained off and the other one couldn’t go ahead because some volunteers dropped out and we didn’t have anyone on the substitutes bench.
Corfe Mullen Community Speedwatch (CSW) was formed in 2015 because there was a widely- perceived need for a local initiative to do something about speed. The person who led this initiative became the Coordinator for our CSW, the only defined role. Community Speedwatch is part of Dorset Road Safe, which gives guidance on forming groups. The first part of the guidance is, to misquote the Beatles, “All you need is money” i.e. find some funding for the equipment, without which nothing else is possible. The basic equipment comprised a handheld radar, signs and a counting device. At the time this equipment cost about £400 and we applied successfully to the former East Dorset Council to fund it. Once we had the kit we needed volunteers and guidance from Dorset Road Safe on operating procedure, choosing sites
for SNT approval, booking and reporting CSW sessions. There was a lot to do after that and we
had excellent support from the Corfe Mullen Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) whose role in CSW is primarily to approve sites and vet volunteers. We work closely with the SNT. Because the main objective of CSW is to raise speed awareness most of the sites we chose have high traffic volumes, to be seen by as many people as possible. We were aware of residents’ complaints about speeding, so we also chose some known speeding blackspots. After that all we had to do was develop our way of working, liaise with Corfe Mullen Home Watch to publicise CSW and recruit volunteers. Many lessons were learned and still are being learned.
