Sailing too expensive? Dog Walking & Pet Sitting Services
Sailing needn’t be expensive. Good used boats are plentiful, and a ‘self-help’ club like Lilliput provides all the facilities and membership of a friendly club at a much lower cost than you might anticipate.
Lilliput Sailing Club has no unnecessary overheads – all members give a little time and effort to running the Club. Hence the very modest fees: the annual subscription for full membership is just £107. (There is a one-off joining fee of £214.)
We cater for sailing dinghies and small sailing cruisers. It costs £60 to keep a sailing dinghy here for the summer. The club borders the Salterns Lagoon; a sheltered location for newcomers to sail in before accessing the harbour.
Small cruisers (to 30ft overall length) choose between moorings in the lagoon, for shallower vessels, or outside the lagoon for the deeper boats.
A seasonal mooring (including Harbour Dues and Crown Estates charges for 2020) for a 23ft cruiser would cost £404 for a deeper mooring, or £329 in the lagoon.
Most sailing dinghies vacate the yard at the end of the season, allowing cruisers to be craned ashore for winter storage. The cost of lifting and storing a 23ft cruiser is £188.
So, for a 23ft sailing cruiser, the overall cost of a seasonal lagoon mooring followed by winter storage is currently £517.
Membership also provides free access to many sailing activities, such as racing, rallies and an annual Regatta, as well as social events throughout the winter months.
Prices of used sailing boats have fallen considerably. Websites such as ApolloDuck (https://yachts.
apolloduck.co.uk/) have many examples, and most prices can be negotiated down.
