Church news The season of Lent we are in is a season of
refl ection and there’s much to refl ect on in our world right now: recent fl oods, the urgent need to reduce our carbon footprint and most recently Covid 19.
Often the news images that we receive of serious events threatening whole communities comes from further afi eld rather than from our own country with its normally temperate climate, relatively stable society and well developed health care. In recent years however this seems to be changing as more communities in our country are facing fl ooding; and now the impact of the Covid 19 virus with longer term consequences as yet unknown but certainly on a scale not experienced in recent times. These things powerfully serve to remind us that life can be deeply unpredictable. As adversity comes closer to home, naturally our fears can increase.
At Easter we recall the same words spoken by angels that we perhaps associate more with Christmas: ‘fear not’. Easter is for Christians a season of hope and the words ‘fear not’ fi nd their fulfi lment in the death and resurrection of Jesus. When all looked hopeless and the disciples thought all was lost as Jesus was crucifi ed, God in the most unexpected way changed the course of history through the resurrection.
The most frequent command in the Bible is ‘do not be
afraid!’ God certainly isn’t saying ‘everything is fi ne, there is nothing to be afraid of’, when He commands us not to fear. Rather it is an acknowledgement of life’s precariousness and that sometimes we are rightly afraid when confronted with the unknown, the unexpected and the seemingly hopeless. But God is alongside us, working with us in our communities, in our politics and our governments and He will not leave us to face our fears alone. I have spoken with many in our community who share their experiences of calling out to God in times of crisis and have found Him to give courage, strength, direction and comfort. At times things are beyond our control and the story of Easter is a powerful reminder to continue to put our trust and hope in God who has promised to be with us always.
