Sustainable gardening Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery
Spring is only just around the corner as our gardens start to slowly awaken from their winter slumber.
The light levels begin to creep up as do flowering bulbs, bursting through with the first splash of colour of the new year. Here on the nursery it’s full steam ahead as we work everyday to pot
Camellia x williamsii ‘Debbie’
and grow a wide array of plants for all to enjoy.
Between the wind and the rain there is plenty to be getting on with around the garden. Prune back deciduous grasses and comb through evergreens to remove dead leaves. Winter flowering shrubs that have gone over can be pruned, as can hardy evergreens.
Now is the time to propagate seed potatoes, summer bulbs, herbs and an array of veg seed; of which we have a great range. To help with preparing beds and soils we recommend digging in some of our locally sourced, peat-free cow compost. It’s an excellent and sustainable organic option for all nutrient loving plants such as vegetables and roses.
When you pay us a visit, you may notice all our pot plants have been top dressed with a tidy looking mulch. It’s called Blooming Amazing and is made just down the road in Poundbury as a by-product of sustainable gas production. Spread around beds and borders, it works brilliantly as a weed suppressant, and provides important nutrients for plants. It’s also a food source for earthworms who come to the surface to have a feast, upon where they take the organic matter back down below, supporting a healthy soil eco-system.
