Community Speedwatch Making Corfe Mullen Safer
At this time of year the weather is often against us and the days are short.
Since 2015 we’ve only managed to run a total of 11 sessions in January, but the incidence of speeding does not seem to have increased as a result. This is encouraging and, as Corfe Mullen CSW is now a familiar sight in the village, we are definitely raising speed awareness. That’s exactly what CSW was set up to do. When we record a vehicle speeding, Dorset Road Safe just sends a polite advisory letter to the keeper. There is no further action unless the keeper has received three or more of these letters within the space of 12 months. The letters will, hopefully, raise speed awareness enough to avoid penalty notices. That’s the raison d’etre of Community Speedwatch
Every month we receive a report from Dorset Road Safe on results for all CSW teams in Dorset. This tells us how many 1st, 2nd and 3rd letters our reports have generated and it also tells us
how accurate we have been. We have some more work to do on this! We’re using four volunteers
on as many sessions as we can and we’re using binoculars to help us identify vehicle models and record motorcycle registrations, but we still need to improve.
This year our volunteers will be joining Dorset Road Safe officers on enforcement operations. This is a new initiative, which gives us a chance to check that our equipment is working properly and learn how to make CSW more effective.
This year we will, as always, try to recruit more volunteers. CSW is making a difference and that’s rewarding.
