Family health: Air pollution Not just hot air

Air pollution is the single greatest environmental threat to public health. Many of the causes of air pollution are major contributors to climate change, which also impacts on the population’s health.

It is estimated that, on an annual basis, approximately 40,000 deaths are attributable to outdoor air pollution in the UK. Air pollution has been linked to cancer, asthma, heart disease diabetes, obesity and dementia.

The effects of air pollution can start before birth and are shown to have a greater impact on babies, children and young people. These effects are particularly damaging because they can have a lifelong impact and those with existing health conditions are even more vulnerable.

Air pollution and climate change are inextricably linked, with many of the factors contributing to air pollution also driving climate change. So what can we do to reduce our contribution and exposure to air pollution?

1. Choose to walk or cycle short journeys instead of taking the car. Not only will this reduce emissions,

but air pollution is frequently higher inside a vehicle than outside of it. Active travel also has the added benefi ts of improving mental and physical health through increased physical activity.

2. Use public transport for longer journeys.

3. When walking or cycling, choose quieter back streets rather than main roads and walk on the side of the pavement furthest away from traffi c.

4. When driving is the only option, try not to leave the car ‘idling’ when stopped in traffi c or when stationary for other reasons.

5. Use electric vehicles rather than diesel and petrol vehicles where this is a viable choice.

Air pollution is the single greatest environmental threat to public health in the UK, and it disproportionately affects children, young people and more deprived communities. It will take societal change. It is hoped that health professionals will take up the baton and lead that change.
