Church news
Climate change is very much on the agenda as we begin this new year with the extensive coverage of the Australian bushfi res, highlighting the effects in one country of warming temperatures. The environment will be on many agendas this year, including a UN Climate Change Summit and a global conference of bishops in Lambeth.
The Archbishop of Canterbury’s chosen book for Lent 2020 is ‘Saying Yes to Life’ by Ruth Valerio. The ‘blurb’ on the book reads: “Saying Yes to Life lifts our focus from natural, everyday concerns to issues that are having an impact on millions of lives around the world. As people made in the image of God, we are entrusted to look after what he has created.” Ruth Valerio imaginatively draws on the Days of Creation (Genesis 1) as she relates themes of light, water, land, the seasons, other creatures, humankind, Sabbath rest and resurrection hope to matters of environmental, ethical and social concern. One amazon reviewer writes: “An invitation to wonder afresh at how amazing the natural world is, and a call to act now to live justly and to choose life – life for all.”
As a community in Corfe Mullen there are many actively seeking to reduce the harmful impact we can have on
our environment. The community litter pick and the Win on Waste collections are just two examples; and last year the church was awarded an Eco-church award as we seek to fi nd more sustainable ways of operating. We therefore hope there are those in the community who may fi nd this book a helpful resource.
During Lent we plan to run a book club, which will meet six times during Lent to discuss a chapter of the book each week. Anybody who has an interest in the environment and would like the opportunity to get together with others to discuss the issues raised by the book are very welcome to attend. Books can be ordered from bookshops or online and it is also available as an e-book. Please read chapter 1 before the fi rst session. We will meet on Wednesday evenings at 7-8.15pm on 4th, 11th 18th, 25th March and 1st April at St Nicholas Church in the Kingfi sher lounge.
