Five Realms fan and aspiring author, Dylan, was keen to know how young writers can follow in Kieran’s footsteps:

“Read lots and lots and try lots of different types of writing, from poems to short stories. Try and find your voice. Keep notebooks and jot down ideas. You can still use ideas years after you’ve written them down. I was in my thirties when I wrote my first book.

will be a sequel to The Peculiars at some point too.”

Podkin One-Ear was awarded Book of the Month at Waterstones Newport, as well as receiving the Blue Peter Award 2017. This year, it picked up the prestigious French literary prize, Le Prix Sorcières.

“The Blue Peter Award is voted for by children. It was great to know they were enjoying it.”

“Before you get published, you need to go to an agent. Have a thick skin and get used to being rejected a lot. Every time you get knocked down, get back up again. I sent a section of my story off and they came back and said they wanted to read the whole book. They were looking at it for about a year, before they came back and said they didn’t want it. I then heard about The Times Children’s Fiction competition in 2011 and I finally got published!”

We’re thrilled to say Kieran will be a judge in Style of Wight’s upcoming children’s story competition, for budding young authors. Keep an eye on www.styleofwight.co.uk to find out more.

A review, by Dylan Shephard, 10

Uki and the Outcasts, by Kieran Larwood, is a wondrous story, which all ages will enjoy. I was gripping on to every last word. Uki might have been a sad, lonely rabbit at first, but he meets and saves new friends, and together they fight to catch the dreaded spirits, to reunite them with their prison cells.

The story is told by a bard, to his apprentice (Rue), which I think is nice. They walk the plains, telling the story as they go. Rue is always asking for more of Uki's story, but is unaware of the dangers around him.

Kieran Larwood must have put a lot of thought and imagination in to make this story come alive for all readers, like it did for me. The perfect book.

Uki and the Outcasts is out now at Waterstones, Newport and online, along with Kieran's other books, The Peculiars, Podkin One-ear, The Gift of Dark Hollow and The Beasts of Grimheart.
