Self care for the four seasons of
the menstrual cycle There are four distinct inner seasons of the menstrual cycle each month. Self care at each stage of your cycle has positive benefi ts every day of the year.
Inner Winter: Days 1-6
Inner winter is the bleed phase and time to slow things down. It’s the time to pause, refl ect and connect to intuition and creativity. It’s also the time for rest, taking naps, reading and journalling, as well as restorative activities such as yoga nidra, meditation and gentle walks.
Inner Spring: Days 7 - 13
Inner Spring is a time of new beginnings, possibility and potential. Physical, mental and emotional energy starts to build and you may feel more playful and inspired. Inner Spring is the time to start enjoying swimming, yin yoga, dancing and mindful, clean eating.
Inner Summer: Days 14 - 21
As ovulation occurs around day 14, so too does high summer energy. Creativity and productivity levels hit their peak, and you feel you can take on the world. Now is the time for fun, socialising and play, so enjoy some more active exercise both outdoors and in the bedroom! But be mindful of putting plans into motion that could come into effect two weeks later in your inner winter.
Inner Autumn: Days 22 - 28 (or when you start bleeding)
Progesterone and Oestrogen levels drop sharply after day 21 meaning energy starts falling. However, you may experience one last burst of energy to get things done before your Inner Winter. Along with a drop in hormones comes the physical symptoms, irritability, high emotions and self critical judgement that comes with this pre-menstrual phase, so practising self compassion and self care are key. Baths, nature walks, and nourishing food is essential for this time, as well as making sure sleep becomes a priority.
Tracking and journalling your mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and creative energy levels will help you understand your own rhythms and cycles and will go a long way to holistic wellbeing throughout the year ahead.
