With the rise of automatic headlights and daytime running lights, or DRLs, it’s easy to assume all your lights are taken care of when you switch the engine on. But that isn’t always the case – even if your dashboard is lit up. There is wide concern that many drivers may be inadvertently making themselves harder to spot from behind when daytime visibility is reduced because they’re relying on automatic lighting systems and front-only daytime running lights. Daytime running lights are bright, low powered lights, usually using LED technology, which operate all the time that your car is running - a sight now commonplace on British roads.


One of their main purposes is to make it easier for other road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and cars to notice your presence on the road. But in foggy or wet conditions, they are not sufficient enough alone to make you properly visible. This is because DRLs are integrated into the headlight clusters of a car only, meaning there are no daytime running lights at the rear of the car. As they are brighter than conventional dipped lights, DLRs are usually separate from the dipped beam lights and not be used to drive with at night or in low light conditions due to the increased risk of dazzling oncoming traffic.


Daytime running lights were once the preserve of upmarket German cars but since 2011, EU legislation has dictated that all new cars must have them.


Drivers tend not to crash into things they can see. That’s why taking proactive control of the lights you use – and using your common sense - is a good way to increase your safety and reduce your risk on winter journeys.


• If visibility is reduced during the day, use dipped headlights at all times. Switching them on will ensure your rear lights are on so you’ll be more conspicuous from front and rear. • Make regular checks of your main beams, indicators, sidelights, fog lights and brake lights.


• Know where your fog light controls are located so you can turn them on and off as conditions require.


• Familiarise yourself with any automatic lighting systems on your car, but don’t rely on them to provide the right level of visibility in all conditions and light.


• Make sure you use lights in such a way that you’ll gain the maximum benefit, and other road users will have the best chance of seeing you. • Look out for other drivers who may not be using lights as effectively as they could.
