The beauty of nature
For many of us, winter is a time to stay home in the cosy warmth. But for Doncaster photographer and wildlife enthusiast, Niall Bell, winter is the perfect time to capture the diverse beauty nature has to offer.
Thank you to Niall for sharing these stunning images with us – and the one on our front cover – in the hope that they will inspire people to enjoy nature a little more and care to respect and conserve the planet we share with these beautiful animals. The UK is home to 40 percent of the world’s grey seal
population which come here to breed every winter; one of winter’s biggest wildlife spectacles is the many pups are born this time of year, ready to start their life in a new year. This photograph was taken off the North Yorkshire coast.
There are a breeding pair of
little owls that nest in Branton each year. In the image you can see the snow falling yet they sit there like it’s a summer’s day – even though Niall was wrapped up in a jumper and coat when photographing them. The image of a mature red deer stag shows the biting cold and steamy breath that you get

in the early hours of a winter morning – Niall’s favourite time to be out. The image was taken in Leicestershire, but you can also find Red deer populations here in South Yorkshire too; however, they are quite difficult to find in the wild. Roe deer are more common
in South Yorkshire and live on most of our doorsteps. The image shows mum and her young grazing at sunrise on a very cold winter’s morning. The orange glow from the sun can make an otherwise cold scene look cosy. Interestingly, thousands of people drive past this heard every day and don’t even know that they are there. Perhaps the biggest wildlife symbol of winter, robins start to fatten up early winter so by January time they look like balls of fluff. They are exceptionally inquisitive and just a pleasure to watch.
